Calculate how long the pest intends to gnaw through the hole in the collector's edition.
In a world where everyone idolizes M. Yu. Lermontov, there is a dissident worm. He hates the work of the Russian classic. The worm hatches an insidious plan: to spoil the collector's edition of the hated author, which is in the library under round-the-clock surveillance.
The worm sees that three coveted books are on a shelf close to each other. He decides to gnaw an even horizontal hole in them: from the first page of the first volume to the last page of the third volume. What damage (in centimeters) will the pest inflict if the cover on each side of the publication is 1 mm thick, and the thickness of all pages of each volume is 3 cm?
The books on the shelf are from left to right. The first page of the first volume is the page on the far right of the volume; the last page of the third volume is the leftmost page of the volume. That is, the worm will gnaw through the cover of the first volume, the cover of the second volume, all the pages of the second volume, one more cover of the second volume, the cover of the third volume and stop. Let's calculate the damage: 1 + 1 + 30 + 1 + 1 = 34 mm = 3 cm and 4 mm.
