The best full-length dog cartoons

1. Lady and the Tramp

  • USA, 1955.
  • Animation, comedy, melodrama.
  • Duration: 76 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 3.

Cartoons about dogs: "Lady and the Tramp"

The life of a young couple is transformed at the moment when they have a charming Cocker Spaniel girl named Lady. But a few years later, a small child also appears in the family, and this radically changes the situation. The upset Lady runs away and meets a stray dog, Rogue. He is ready to open the world outside her yard for a new acquaintance. This is how their difficult love story begins.

The Lady and the Tramp can be safely included among the most charming couples in love in the history of cinema, and the scene with a romantic dinner in the courtyard of an Italian restaurant has long become a vibrant pop-cultural symbol.

Interestingly, "Lady and the Tramp" clearly refers to a love scene, although at the time the slightest hint of sex before marriage in the movies was frowned upon by Hollywood. The explanation is very simple: the censorship never got to the cartoon, because the main characters are not people, but dogs.

2.11 Dalmatians

  • USA, 1961.
  • Animation, comedy.
  • Duration: 79 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 2.

The odious fashionista Cruella De Ville is going to steal Dalmatian puppies and sew new clothes for herself from their beautiful skin. The villainess sends two stupid bandits, Jasper and Horace, to the case. But the owners - the good-natured and a little absent-minded composer Roger and his wife Anita - are not going to sit back and go in search.

Of course, the cartoon is primarily about dogs, but most of all the audience remembered the eccentric Madame De Ville. The creators deliberately made her look a little like the actress Marlene Dietrich (long mouthpiece in her hand, high cheekbones, arched thin eyebrows) and chose a very fashionable wardrobe for her.

3. Fox and dog

  • USA, 1981.
  • Animation, adventure, drama.
  • Duration: 83 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 3.

Todd the fox and Cooper the puppy are growing up on neighboring farms. At first the animals were very friendly. But over time, they understand that nature has prepared one of them the role of a hunter, and the other - a victim.

Daniel P. Mannix's original novel ended tragically. Therefore, the Walt Disney Pictures team decided not to repeat Bambi's mistakes, but to rewrite the script so as not to injure young viewers. Nevertheless, the ending of the cartoon came out with a bittersweet and very different from the traditional endings for the studio.

4. Desperate dogs

  • UK, USA, 1982.
  • Animation, adventure, drama.
  • Duration: 103 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 8.

Two dogs - an elderly Roof and a young Snitter - escape from the laboratory, where experiments are being performed on them. This is how their long and difficult struggle for survival begins, in which they are helped by a fox named Passover.

Martin Rosen's cartoon is not intended for children at all. The film criticizes animal cruelty, and does so in such a dark and even depressing style that viewing can be difficult even for some adults.

5. Oliver and company

  • USA, 1988.
  • Animation, adventure, comedy.
  • Duration: 74 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 7.

Lonely kitten Oliver meets several stray dogs. The problem is that the thief Feigin, who sheltered the dogs, owes a large sum to an influential mafioso. To help out the owner, Oliver and the company go on business.

The cartoon retells the events of the novel "The Adventures of Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens. Only all the main characters in it became animals, and the creators transferred the action to the noisy and colorful New York of the 1980s.

6. All dogs go to heaven

  • Great Britain, USA, 1989.
  • Animation, adventure, comedy.
  • Duration: 84 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 8.

Charlie the dog goes to heaven, but lingers there for a short time, because he finds a not entirely honest way to get back. Once again on Earth, the rogue meets a little girl who can talk to animals.

The cartoon may seem too dark to show to children, because it touches on the topic of death, and the title of the picture is quite provocative. But legendary animator Don Bluth deliberately came up with a title that catches the viewer even before watching it.

7. Balto

  • USA, 1995.
  • Animation, adventure.
  • Duration: 71 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 1.

Selfless half-breed dog Balto sets out in search of the lost team, where a very important medicine is located. On the way to his goal, the hero is helped by the goose Boris, the husky Jenna and the bears.

The cartoon was released under the patronage of the famous Steven Spielberg, but did not receive much success - the revolutionary Toy Story, which was in theaters around the same time, interfered.

8. Volt

  • USA, 2008.
  • Animation, adventure.
  • Duration: 96 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 8.

Dog Volt grew up on the set, so he sincerely believes that he can shoot lasers from his eyes. When the creators of the project, due to falling ratings, decide to shoot a series with an unhappy ending, the gullible hero accidentally finds himself in the real world, where he very quickly realizes that his superpowers are just special effects.

The kind and enlightening Volt was a big break for Walt Disney Pictures. The fact is that before that the company had been releasing technically imperfect and not particularly remarkable cartoons for several years in a row. Volt is well drawn. It is also full of witty jokes and addictive action.

9. Up

  • USA, 2009.
  • Animation, adventure.
  • Duration: 96 minutes.
  • IMDb: 8, 2.

Karl Fredriksen and his late wife dreamed of traveling to distant countries all their lives, but they never fulfilled their desire. Then the elderly hero goes on a journey alone, launching his own house into the air. The problem is that the chatty young scout Russell accidentally turns up on board.

Among the many unique cartoon characters, talking dogs stand out. It is especially funny when dogs suddenly interrupt even the most serious conversation in order to look somewhere to the side and say "Squirrel!" Director Bob Peterson personally came up with this joke after watching his pets for several days in a row.

10. Frankenweeny

  • USA, 2012.
  • Animation, comedy, adventure, horror.
  • Duration: 87 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 9.

Young Victor's favorite bull terrier Sparky dies. The boy cannot accept the loss of a friend and uses all his knowledge to bring the dog back to life. But it soon turns out that Sparky has become a little different, and even decided to run away.

Frankenweenie grew out of an old short film for which director Tim Burton was once ousted from Disney Studios, accompanied by the unflattering wording of "a waste of labor and money." Ironically, many years later, his own "Alice in Wonderland" brought the company a huge amount of money. By thus proving his commercial potential to former employers, Burton was given the long-awaited opportunity to make Frankenweenie a full-length film.

11. The Secret Life of Pets

  • USA, 2016.
  • Animation, comedy, adventure.
  • Duration: 87 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6, 5.

Terrier Max lives in perfect harmony with his mistress Katie. But suddenly the woman brings home another dog named Duke. Naturally, the struggle for a place in the sun leads to the fact that unlucky dogs find themselves far from home.

The Secret Life of Pets is often compared to Toy Story - and not at all in favor of the first picture. The tape is clearly not up to the level of Pixar studio: there are too many cliches and predictability in it. But not very picky viewers and those who are looking for only a comedy-adventure component in cartoons will most likely be satisfied.

12. Island of dogs

  • USA, 2018.
  • Animation, adventure, drama.
  • Duration: 101 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 9.

12-year-old Atari goes to look for his pet on a garbage island, where the evil mayor ordered to take all the dogs out. Five local dogs are called to help the boy and protect him from the Japanese authorities - Chief, Rex, Boss, Duke and King.

Wes Anderson and his team have done an incredibly painstaking job. As in the creation of the previous cartoon by the director Fantastic Mr. Fox, the method of shooting puppet characters was used here, so the result was truly mesmerizing.

Best dog cartoons

1. Chestnut

  • USSR, 1952.
  • Animation, adventure, drama.
  • Duration: 32 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 4.

A mongrel dog named Kashtanka lives with a carpenter, but one day he gets lost on the street. There she is noticed by a clown-trainer from the circus, takes her to his home and teaches her to perform various tricks in the arena.

Chekhov's story "Kashtanka" is not deprived of the attention of directors: both animation and feature films were filmed based on it. But the most famous so far remains the classic Soviet cartoon of 1952, created by the method of rotoscopy.

2. Mitten

  • USSR, 1967.
  • Animation, drama.
  • Duration: 10 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 8.

A little girl dreams of a dog, but a strict and busy mother does not allow her to have a pet. Then the heroine begins to imagine that her red knitted mitten is a real puppy.

The cartoon lasts very little, but even in such a short time it manages to say a lot about loneliness, parents' misunderstanding of their children and the magic of imagination that helps to cope with any difficulties.

3. Bring Rex back

  • USSR, 1975.
  • Animation, adventure, drama.
  • Duration: 16 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 5.

A dog named Rex bravely rescues his young master Seryozha. But the feat comes at a high price: Rex dies. The boy's parents and veterinarian know about the death of the dog, but hesitate to tell the child the truth.

Animation directors Vladimir Pekar and Vladimir Popov put together several wonderful films that have stood the test of time (including the dilogy about the bear Umka). But the short film "Bring Rex Back" turned out to be especially sincere and painfully piercing.

4. Blue puppy

  • USSR, 1976.
  • Animation, adventure, musical comedy.
  • Duration: 20 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 4.

The cute blue-haired puppy tries to befriend the rest of the dogs, but all he gets is insults and ridicule. Suddenly, an evil pirate lands on the shore and kidnaps the hero. A noble sailor comes to the rescue, but due to the intrigues of the nasty black cat he himself is captured.

Everything is perfect in this cartoon: surreal animation stylized as watercolors, charming songs based on poems by Yuri Entin and characters voiced by all your favorite Soviet artists.

5. Three from Prostokvashino

  • USSR, 1978.
  • Animation, adventure, comedy.
  • Duration: 18 minutes.
  • IMDb: 8, 2.

An independent city boy Uncle Fyodor leaves his parents' house for the village to live there with new friends - the household cat Matroskin and the simple-minded dog Sharik.

None of the three cartoons about Prostokvashino is complete without funny episodes with the participation of Sharik. So, in the first episode, the hero helps his friends look for treasure and makes his own adjustments to Uncle Fyodor's letter to his parents, and in the second he is fond of photography with unexpected consequences.

6. Dog in boots

  • USSR, 1981.
  • Animation, musical comedy.
  • Duration: 20 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 5.

The Noble Dog falls in love with the queen's dog and receives a responsible task: to return the stolen necklace so that the ruler can wear jewelry for the appointed ball. In this important mission, the hero is helped by his faithful friends - Fat Man, Handsome and Noble, but the cats-guards at every step are trying to prevent them.

The immortal novel by Alexandre Dumas has been reinterpreted many times in cinema. And in this cartoon work, the legendary musketeers became noble poodles. In addition, the cartoon parodies the popular adventure film by Georgy Yungvald-Khilkevich "D'Artanyan and the Three Musketeers", and the main character is very similar to the young Mikhail Boyarsky.

7. Once upon a time there was a dog

  • USSR, 1982.
  • Animation, comedy, drama.
  • Duration: 10 minutes.
  • IMDb: 8, 6.

The elderly dog could not drive the thief away, so the dog is thrown out of the yard into the forest. There, the hero meets an understanding wolf, who helps him restore his good name and return to his family. And after a while the dog decides to thank his friend.

The work of the director Eduard Nazarov is adored and appreciated by the audience for the unique Ukrainian national flavor and well-aimed phrases, which have spread into quotes (“Sho, again?”, “I'll sing right now!”, “You come in, if that”).

8. Doug's special assignment

  • USA, 2009.
  • Animation, comedy.
  • Duration: 5 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7, 0.
Cartoons about dogs: "Dag's Special Assignment"
Cartoons about dogs: "Dag's Special Assignment"

The cartoon tells about the life of the dog Doug before the hero met the characters of the cartoon "Up" Carl and Russell. In the story, the harsh shepherd dog Alpha gives him a number of "important" tasks just in order to get rid of a stupid comrade. But no matter how simple or meaningless the next assignment turns out to be, Doug successfully fails.

The best animated series about dogs

1. The great detective Holmes

  • Japan, 1984-1985.
  • Anime, detective, steampunk.
  • Duration: 1 season.
  • IMDb: 7, 5.
Cartoons about dogs: "The Great Detective Holmes"
Cartoons about dogs: "The Great Detective Holmes"

The series is based on the famous detective novels by Arthur Conan Doyle, only all the characters, including Sherlock Holmes, look like dogs. At the same time, the corporate identity of one of the creators, Hayao Miyazaki, is guessed from the first shots.

2. Catdog

  • USA, 1998-2005.
  • Animation, comedy.
  • Duration: 3 seasons.
  • IMDb: 6, 5.

The Cat and the Dog, ironically, share one body in two, but due to very different characters and interests, it can be extremely difficult for them to get along with each other. In addition, Kotops often gets hit by a gang of local bullies.

This is a very strange, but at the same time incredibly creative cartoon, the events in which sometimes take an even too surrealistic turn. For example, the viewer will simply have to accept the fact that Rabbit, the main antagonist of the series, changes his profession every episode, and nothing will be told about the origin of the main character.

3. Courage is a cowardly dog

  • USA, 1999-2002.
  • Animation, comedy.
  • Duration: 4 seasons.
  • IMDb: 8, 2.

A little dog named Courage (English courage, courage) is ironically afraid of everything. But at the same time, the hero usually turns out to be smart enough to save his masters Muriel and Eustace from trouble over and over again.

John Dilworth's highly inventive cartoon is equally intimidating and amusing. Specific art, strange characters and frightening music - all this makes the series, to put it mildly, unusual. But it is precisely thanks to this non-standard approach that the cartoon serves as an excellent therapy for children's fears.
