On August 5, the film by James Gunn "Suicide Squad: Mission Bash" was released on Russian screens - the next chapter of the increasingly discordant DC Universe.

The first part, which was shot in 2016 by David Eyre, has a difficult fate. The director conceived a serious film, but due to the changed policy of Warner Bros. he was forced to hastily convert the dark action movie into a comedy.

As a result, the picture came out dynamic and almost clip-like, but completely meaningless. What was the cost of the main villain, played by Cara Delevingne, who just stood there and waved her arms throughout the film. Ever since then, Eyre has dreamed of releasing his own directorial cut, which was talked about a little louder after the success of Justice League from Zach Snyder.

Meanwhile, within the framework of the cinematic universe, a new "Suicide Squad" is released - a swanky and violent author's comedy by James Gunn. Moreover, his choice for the role of director can be considered the main success in the development of the picture.

"Mission Through" only formally continues the history of the previous part. In fact, the author, who personally worked on the script, completely relaunches the plot, keeping only a couple of familiar characters. In terms of style and presentation, the film is closer to Gunn's previous works: Guardians of the Galaxy by Marvel and early trash comedies like the parody Super.

Correct Suicide Squad

Sinister Amanda Waller once again gathers a team of criminals to complete a dangerous mission. A detachment led by a professional killer Bloodsport (Idris Elba) must infiltrate the territory of the state of Corto Maltese, where a recent coup took place, and destroy the base on which a dangerous weapon is being developed.

But first, the characters need to build relationships. Together with Bloodsport, a dull but strong Shark King (voiced by Sylvester Stallone), an inadequately cruel Peacemaker (John Cena), a Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) with incomprehensible powers and Pied Piper 2 (Daniela Melshior) are sent on a mission. died.

Not without the beloved by the audience Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), combining genius and madness, and the bold but naive Rick Flagg (Yuelle Kinnaman). Obviously, such a company is unlikely to reach its goal without incident.

Even a quick reading of the synopsis or watching the trailers of a new film immediately leads to strange thoughts. Amanda Waller sends Rick Flagg and a team of criminals on a suicide mission, in which Harley Quinn is present - a terrible mutant, a very cool black mercenary who got involved in the case because of his daughter - and other freakish villains. That is, the plot of the picture simply copies Ayr's film. But in this case, it's even good.

Mission Bash provides an opportunity to see what the first Suicide Squad was supposed to be in the dreams of Warner Bros. bosses. Simply converting a serious movie into a comedy, and even under the supervision of producers, is not a very promising occupation. But to remove the author's hooligan trash is an ideal option for a story about a team of doomed criminals. Gunn seems to deliberately abandon all of Air's developments.

Harley Quinn gets her best look. Fortunately, the image of a sex doll has already been rid of her in "Birds of Prey", but now the heroine is dressed up in a costume from the game Batman: Arkham City, then in an insane dress. However, here she finally turns into that driving anti-heroine that comic book fans love so much: equally charming and crazy. Harley talks incessantly and reacts completely unpredictably to any situation.

Even with the initially serious Bloodsport, the director treats ironically. At first, Gunn wanted to invite Elba to the role of Bloodshot, played by Will Smith - hence the similarity of images. But then they replayed everything so as not to completely abandon the famous actor. However, this was only beneficial.

The director made the new character deeper, and at the same time gave him a kind of distorting mirror in the form of the Peacemaker. They have almost the same strengths, but the coolness of one is expressed in the outright idiocy of the other. And if someone does not notice the irony from the very beginning, then the scene with the competition to kill enemies will put everything in its place.

Humor and cruelty go side by side in Gunn's film - and this is one of the main indicators of the freedom that the director was given when filming. Not so long ago, Zack Snyder was only allowed to show the dismembered dismemberment in the director's version of Batman v Superman, released on media.

And in the new "Suicide Squad" heads and limbs are chopped left and right, and blood literally floods the screen. Moreover, the director does not hesitate to kill not only faceless villains, but also some of the main characters. Fortunately, most of them are real scoundrels who do not cause pity.

As a result, "Mission Kick Through" turns into a very dynamic, funny and bloody attraction that all fans have dreamed of. The text jokes, in which Gunn is a master, are interspersed with grotesque and ridiculous cruelty. Any serious moment is discharged by a gag, and the adventures of the heroes are getting crazier every minute.

A very good "bad" movie

Surprisingly, James Gunn has been called for the second time to update the superhero cinematic universe. In the same way, he was invited to dilute the world of Marvel with his humor, when the audience began to get tired of too emasculated production projects like "Thor 2".

But in the case of Guardians of the Galaxy, the director still had at least some obligations to the foundation of the MCU. Perhaps that is why he then chose a project that is as distant as possible from the events of previous films.

In the case of DC, it seems that Gann was really given full creative freedom. And this is expressed not only in the bloodiness and murder of characters. First of all, the author clearly refers to his favorite topic - cheap exploitation cinema, which he loved from his youth and from which his career once began.

Viewers who know the director only from the latest works can be overwhelmed by such passion. But those who have caught at least his "Porn for the Whole Family" - a collection where plots from films for adults were played in a realistic setting - will not be at all surprised by the madness happening on the screen.

Gunn himself admitted that he deliberately chose the most ridiculous superheroes from the comics. There is no need to talk about the opening scene of the film: this is simply a freak show of stupid characters. There is even Nathan Fillion with his arms detaching and flying. And yes, such a villain did appear in DC comics.

But even in the main part, the director makes one of the main characters a character named Man-polka-dots, who throws colored peas and represents his mother in place of enemies!

If this is not enough, then it’s just worth saying that the main villain of "Mission Through" is a giant alien starfish. True, even such a creature manages to move more and look more interesting than the Enchantress in the first film.

In the new "Suicide Squad" everything is "over the edge". If murder, then necessarily in dozens of different ways - one stranger than the other. It is necessary not only to shoot the enemy, but to tear him apart, or at least bite off his head. And that at the same time will continue to follow the look of what is happening.

But it is important to understand that James Gunn does not turn "Mission Bash" into just a parody of bad movies, as was the case with the horror "Psycho-Dismemberment" of 2020, whose humor was understood only by connoisseurs of the genre. The director is excellent at working with action and visual presentation.

So, the scene of Harley Quinn's release from captivity replays even the most successful fight in Birds of Prey, not to mention the whole old Suicide Squad. Moreover, he complements everything with an incredibly aesthetic foot-fetish worthy of Tarantino himself.

Dozens of Bloodsport gadgets surprise in every scene. And Gann shoots the most ambitious battles without unnecessary flickering and from unexpected angles. Surprisingly, this film can already be cited as a role model for Marvel, which decided from some point to invite indie directors who do not know how to stage action to stage fantastic action movies.

All this is complemented by Gunn's favorite diegetic presentation of the soundtrack - when the music does not just sound off-screen, but the characters themselves listen to it. And also the most amusing text inserts, when the inscriptions are made up either from splashes of blood or from a crowd of rats.

We can say that after the biblical references and the slow-mo of Zack Snyder, only James Gunn managed to create a completely recognizable and personalized DC film. And the same applies to the dramatic part of the picture. Oddly enough, she also exists.

A touching family story

Against the backdrop of stories of grotesque cruelty and references to trash cinema, the following thought may seem surprising. But James Gunn even managed to make Suicide Squad a personal emotional film. Here again, it will not be possible to avoid comparisons with Guardians of the Galaxy. After all, both parts of the Marvel action movie, in fact, were the story of finding loved ones and finding a family.

And already in the first picture, the author's incredible talent manifested itself: he made one of the most touching scenes a conversation between a raccoon and a living tree. What can we say about the sequel, in which Peter Quill learned that his own father could be the main villain.

An attempt to portray the suicide squad as a company of lost people seeking understanding also flashed in Ayr's film. But his heroes clung too much to their individuality and independence. Therefore, the matter did not go beyond a few pretentious phrases. Or maybe the editing ruined everything again - we can only guess.

And again, James Gunn fixes everything - a director for whom family is certainly important: he constantly creates with his numerous relatives. For example, his brother Sean also starred in "Mission Bash" - he worked on capturing Lasky's movements.

Unlike Eyre's painting, Gann's characters, for all their grotesqueness, look like living people. Their closeness and aggression are just a cocoon in which they hide from injury. And in the communication between Bloodsport and Pied Piper 2, the unrealized parental ambitions of the first and the childhood fears of the second quickly appear. And the cameo of Taiki Waititi - another unofficial comic-book writer - will be one of the film's most touching moments.

Even the Shark King, which quite suddenly, at some point will seem like a very charming hero. And Harley will tell more about his traumatic past with the Joker in just one scene than he did in the entire Birds of Prey movie.

Yes, Gunn even too brazenly repeats the techniques of "Guardians of the Galaxy". But they are working here again, and a little better. Therefore, his team from the "Suicide Squad" quickly turns into "his own in the board" guys. They, of course, do a lot of vile deeds, and in general they are not very adequate, but they seem so understandable and familiar. Well, except for the Peacemaker. But there must be an absolute moral monster in history.

Suicide Squad: Mission Knock Out is a great attraction for anyone who loves dark humor. Moreover, the film can be watched without even knowing the previous events of the MCU. After all, it is designed to entertain the viewer with action and crazy things, at the same time reminding that all people in the world have about the same worries.

James Gunn relaunched the story perfectly, and we can only hope that for DC and Warner Bros.the picture will become another, along with "Joker", an example of a successful auteur cinema in the mass genre.
