What is the money made of, who develops the design of banknotes, does the issue of new banknotes affect inflation - these questions will be answered by the next lecture from the "Financial Environment" cycle. How much counterfeit money is there in Russia?

The Bank of Russia regularly publishes data on the number of counterfeit banknotes and coins found in the banking system. In 2017, a total of 45,313 counterfeit banknotes were found. For comparison: in 2016, 61,046 fakes were detected.

The most counterfeit bill is 5,000 rubles, but counterfeiters are least interested in paper tens and coins of the same denomination. In terms of the number of detected fakes, the Central Federal District is in the lead, followed by the Southern and Northwestern Federal Districts.

Signs of real bills

The main characteristics by which you can identify genuine banknotes:

• Legend visible to light.
• Micro-patterns and inscriptions that can be seen in a magnifying glass with a magnification of 8-10 times.
• Details that change color depending on the angle of view.
• Embossed lettering perceptible to the touch.
• Elements that glow when exposed to ultraviolet or infrared radiation.

To determine if you are holding a real bill or a fake one, you need to check at least three security features of different types.

If you come across banknotes of the same denomination, differing in details, do not rush to sound the alarm. Most likely, these are modifications of different years - see the year of issue in the corner of the bill.

What real money looks like

Now in circulation are mainly banknotes of the modification of 2004 and 2010. Earlier variants are more difficult to meet - one bill lives on average from 2 to 2, 5 years. Let's figure out how to distinguish real banknotes from counterfeit ones at home without special equipment.

5,000 rubles - modification of 2010

On the front side of the bill there is a monument to Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky against the background of the Khabarovsk embankment, on the back side there is a bridge over the Amur.

A portrait of Muravyov-Amursky and a digital designation of the denomination are visible in the light on the right coupon field of the obverse. You can see the number 5,000 from the even rows of micro-holes. This perforation should not be felt to the touch.

The image of the far bank of the Amur consists of small graphic elements.

The decorative ribbon at the bottom of the front side of the bill has a border from microtext - repeating number 5000. In the top and bottom parts of the front side there are fragments filled with oblique inscriptions repeating the number 5000.

On the reverse side you can see two lines of microtext: at the top - the repeating number 5,000, at the bottom - the text "CBRF5000". There is a thin line pattern at the top and bottom of the coupon fields. Without magnification, it is perceived as an even field.

A digital designation of the denomination is visible on the protective strip. If you look at it from an angle, you will notice that the individual numbers are shifted relative to each other.

In the center of the vertical strip with an ornament there is a single-color field. Twirl the bill in your hands and see how red and green stripes appear on it. The letters "PP" appear on the decorative tape at an angle. The coat of arms of Khabarovsk is made in green; when tilted, a shiny horizontal stripe moves from the middle down or up.

The text "Ticket of the Bank of Russia" and "Five thousand rubles", a mark for visually impaired people, a digital designation of the denomination, strokes on the edges of the front side of the bill stand out to the touch.

2017 sample banknotes

At the end of 2017, the Bank of Russia issued new banknotes, in which it used methods of protecting banknotes that had not been used before. Fraudsters will not learn how to counterfeit such banknotes soon, if at all. But just in case, here are the main ways to check new money.

The design of the banknotes was developed by the artists of Goznak and the Bank of Russia - they made more than 20 sketches of new banknotes. The color scheme was chosen in such a way that banknotes of different denominations were as different as possible from each other in color - this way it is easier for visually impaired people to recognize them.

The 200-ruble bills are made of high-density paper with polymer impregnation, so that their lifespan is increased. It is planned that these banknotes will be very popular, hence the increased requirements for dirt resistance - each such banknote will stand in circulation for up to 20 months. This is quite a decent period: banknotes with a face value of 50 and 100 rubles live on average 15 months. A banknote of 2,000 rubles will have a life of more than 2.5 years.

200 rubles

On the front side there is a monument to the sunken ships in Sevastopol, on the back side - the museum-reserve "Tavricheskiy Chersonesos".

A security thread is visible in the light on the left side of the front side of the banknote: a dark stripe with a repeating light image of the number 200.

Four thread fragments emerge on the surface of the front side. On the light field on the right there is a watermark: a monument to the sunken ships and the number 200.

On the front side, in the upper and lower parts of the banknote, next to the security thread, there is a microtext - a light inscription on a green background “Bank of Russia”. On the right and on the left there are images of the Grafskaya pier. At the bottom of these images there is a repeating inscription "Sevastopol", visible through a magnifying glass. Under the monument to the sunken ships there is a repeating inscription “200 rubles”. The digital designation of the denomination is framed with a border from the repeating word "Sevastopol".

On the reverse side there is a map of Crimea, consisting of small graphic elements: 200 numbers and microimages of representatives of the Crimean flora and fauna. Below the image of Chersonesus there is a microtext: a light repeating inscription "Chersonesos Tauric" on a dark background.

If you slightly turn the bill towards you or away from you, you will notice light rectangles on the security thread, which move up and down when tilted. Take a look at the security thread at an acute angle: it will turn rainbow, and the ruble symbol - ₽ appears on it.

On the left, on a plain field under the coat of arms, the word "Russia" is visible. If you tilt the bill and look at this field from an acute angle, you can see the denomination figures, each of which has its own color.

The inscriptions "Ticket of the Bank of Russia" and "Two hundred rubles" stand out to the touch, as well as horizontal strokes along the edges of the bill.

2,000 rubles

On the front side there is a Russian bridge and the building of the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok, on the back side - the Vostochny cosmodrome.

The security thread in the light looks like a dark stripe with repeating inscriptions "Central Bank of the Russian Federation".

On the light field on the right side of the banknote there is a watermark - a bridge and the number 2,000.

In the upper and lower parts of the obverse and reverse sides of the banknote there is a microtext - the repeating words "Bank of Russia". Take a closer look at the image of the university - in its lower part there is a repeating inscription "Vladivostok". The same inscription is surrounded by a field with a digital designation of the denomination. Under the designation "Two thousand rubles" there is a strip from the microtext "2,000 rubles".

There is a map of the Far East on the back of the bill. It consists of small elements - 2,000 in number and images of representatives of the Far Eastern flora and fauna. The background of the back part consists of tiny graphic elements of the space theme. Under the image of the cosmodrome there is an inscription in negative microtext "Vostochny Cosmodrome".

When the banknote is turned towards and away from oneself, the movement of the denomination figures relative to each other is noticeable on the security thread. Colored symbols of the ruble appear on a rainbow background at an acute angle. On a one-color field with the word "Russia" (it is located on the front side on the left), the number 2,000 appears when tilted.

There is a blue field to the left of the digital designation of the denomination. You can see the ruble symbol on it at an angle. In the image of the sun, when the banknote wiggles, a moving shiny ring is clearly visible.

Slide your finger over the banknote and feel the relief strokes along the edges, the digital designation of the denomination, the inscriptions "Ticket of the Bank of Russia" and "Two thousand rubles" stand out.

What to do with counterfeit money?

If you suspect that you have counterfeit bills on hand, do not try to quickly get rid of them at the nearest store. There is a very real risk of ending up behind bars. The Criminal Code provides for the sale of knowingly counterfeit money up to 5 years of forced labor or imprisonment for up to 8 years plus a substantial fine.

If you have doubts - go to the bank. Specialists will study suspicious bills and, if necessary, send them for a thorough check. If the money turns out to be real, the commercial bank will transfer it to you to the specified account. If it turns out that you have come across a counterfeit banknote, alas, its value will not be reimbursed.
