Why you don't need a new smartphone
Why you don't need a new smartphone

Summer 2019. Manufacturers release more and more new models of phones, and buyers continue to purchase them, diligently portraying deep satisfaction on their faces, sometimes even turning into joy. However, it doesn't really make any sense.

Remember how it all began. Let's go back at least 10 years ago.

The release of each new model was an event. And it was not at all because Nokia or Motorola held a presentation at the Louvre, organized a free tour for journalists and flooded the TV with advertisements. No, the whole point is that the new smartphones were really different from their predecessors. Manufacturers released devices with qualitatively different characteristics and new revolutionary functions.

But everything has changed. Now smartphones of the same series differ from each other in body color, processor frequency and camera resolution only on paper. In real life, the difference between the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S9 is so small that it is difficult to discern even under a microscope. In advertising, we are told about epoch-making innovations, but in practice it turns out to be marking time.

Is this a dead end? No, just a ceiling.

The problem is that manufacturers have run out of fresh ideas. Development goes only along the path of a quantitative increase in technical characteristics, which in no way can bring the mobile industry to the next level. We've got to the point where smartphone makers still want to make big profits, but don't have any new ideas to do so. The only thing that remains is inventing unnecessary functions and advertising, advertising, advertising.

Here is a list of typical tasks for a modern mobile phone:

  • calls;
  • sending and receiving messages;
  • Internet access;
  • music playback;
  • photo and video filming;
  • Email;
  • clock, alarm clock, calculator, voice recorder and other little things.

Did I forget something? Well, then add to the list those items that are important to you. After that, honestly answer two questions:

  • Does your smartphone cope with these tasks?
  • What happens if you buy a more recent model? Will it just change one number in the title, or will you really get a great new experience?

I dare to assume that if your smartphone is only a year or two, then you will not feel absolutely nothing from changing it. No, of course, the very moment of buying, removing from the packaging and removing all sorts of films brings a lot of positive emotions. But then, when the storm subsides, there will be emptiness. Nothing new. Better go on a trip with this money. And put off buying new toys until next season.
