With the release of iOS 4.2, Apple and iTunes smartphones have learned how to remotely play videos on Apple TV. So today I would like to teach MacRadar readers how to convert movies and clips in such a way that they are compatible with AirPlay and look good at the same time.

Apple's spec allows for MPEG4 or H.264 codecs, but we'll stick with the latter. Also, for converting videos, I recommend taking the free and cross-platform Handbrake application.

To process files, you need the following settings:

  • Video Codec: H.264
  • Video bit rate: 5442 kbps (for HD video, any value between 5000 and 6000 will work) or 2124 kbps (for normal video, values between 2000 and 2250 will work)
  • Video resolution: 1280 × 720 (for HD video) or 640x480 (for normal video, although this is approximate)
  • Frames per second: 30 or less
  • Audio Codec: AAC
  • Audio bitrate: 160 kbps
  • Sampling rate: 48 or 44.1 kHz

After downloading and installing Handbrake, you need to select a file, open the Picture Settings window (using the toolbar or the Window> Picture Settings menu item) and set the correct resolution. I only had an ordinary video clip at hand:

Now, in the Video tab, set the video bitrate:

Next, in the Audio settings, set the correct parameters for the sampling rate, audio codec and bitrate:

It remains only to add to the queue all the video files (Add to Queue) that we would like to convert, and click on the Start button.

By the way, for those Mac owners who do not want to mess with deep, albeit uncomplicated, settings, I can recommend the simpler and free Evom video converter. He, however, has a small problem - he does not know how to resize videos. And for Windows users, there is a good alternative in the form of Any Video Converter.
