The Japanese kirigami technique allows you to make beautiful postcards and figures using scrap materials.
What it is
Kirigami is a technique for making volumetric postcards and figures using paper, glue, scissors or a knife. It is considered one of the subtypes of origami. The name "kirigami" comes from the Japanese words "kiru" - to cut and "kami" - paper. This is a relatively new direction. The kirigami technique appeared in the early 1980s. Its founder is the Japanese architect Masahiro Chatani.
What is needed for this
To make a voluminous postcard, you will need:
- paper cutter;
- ruler;
- thick paper or cardboard;
- paper clips or tape with which you will attach the template to the paper.
Place a rug or other backing on the table before you start cutting out the figurines to avoid scratching anything.
How to make a voluminous postcard
Kirigami postcards are cut out according to special templates, samples of which are easy to find on the Internet or to make yourself. If this is your first time cutting out a card, choose a simple template and print it. Place the printed diagram on a rug or backing and use a knife to make cuts in the diagram. It is better to arm yourself with a metal ruler - it is important that the cuts are as accurate as possible.
In the diagrams, in addition to notch lines, there are also fold lines. In order not to be mistaken, you can color them with pencils of different colors. The easiest way will be to start mastering the art of kirigami with the help of video instructions.
Simple kirigami cards
It is better to learn with simple diagrams. These cards are easy to make, even with children.
More complex schemes
Once you've got simple shapes and postcards, you can move on to more intricate templates.
