The head of the UK Department of Health recommended drinking less often and reducing the dose. Maybe Russians should heed this advice.
Dame Sally Davies, the UK's chief medical officer, published the results of a study on alcohol use in the country and made some pretty interesting claims.
Let's make a reservation right away: the norms in this case in the United Kingdom are considered not by volume and not in alcohol equivalent. As a measure, back in the eighties, the so-called unit (or portion, unit) of pure 100 percent alcohol was established in the country, calculated by the formula:
strength of the drink (in degrees) × volume (in ml) ÷ 1,000 = conventional unit of alcohol.
A pint (550 ml) of beer or cider (with a strength of 3, 6 degrees) or a glass of vodka is taken as one unit. A glass of wine with a volume of 175 ml and a strength of 12 degrees is already 2, 1 conventional units of alcohol, and a pint of beer with a strength of 5, 2 degrees is three. You can read more about the number of alcohol units in the volume of your favorite drink here.
Now let's take a closer look at the new recommendations based on research conducted over the past three years. Earlier in the UK, the permissible amount of alcohol consumed per week depended on gender: it was believed that men can drink slightly more alcohol without harm to their own health than women. So, for females, the norm was set at two or three units per day, and for men - more than three or four. Once again: two conventional servings of alcohol are a glass of wine, and three are half a liter of beer.
However, now men are advised to drink as much as women, no more. This means up to three units per day. Desirable - a week.
In addition, Davis strongly recommends abstaining from sleeping at least two days a week. Failure to comply with these rules leads to rather disastrous consequences: alcohol consumption is stress for a person. And in the case of excessive libation, the body simply does not have time to "patch up" itself and begins to work for wear and tear.
Of course, we do not live in Great Britain, we have our own Ministry of Health, but since we are so striving to become a European country, maybe it is worth listening to these recommendations?
