Bright light from a smartphone or tablet screen affects sleep quality. Moreover, it affects badly, as it disrupts the release of melatonin, which is responsible for how well we sleep.

However, a recent study has shown that it is still possible to use gadgets before bed, but with some caveats.

Researchers at The Mayo Clinic in the United States have shown that melatonin levels do not change at 30 lux. In order for the light from the screen not to exceed this level, the brightness must be minimal, and the distance from the screen to the face must be at least 35 centimeters.

We took two tablets and a smartphone for the study. They were used in a dark room at different distances from the subject's face to determine at what distance and at what level of brightness the screen did not interfere with the release of melatonin.

I often sin by using my smartphone or tablet before bed. Most often for reading books. Moreover, the first thing after waking up, I also grab my smartphone and check what happened overnight. Disease? Perhaps. Despite this, it is best to refrain from using gadgets before bed. But if you can't afford it, then remember: 35 centimeters and minimum brightness!
