Where to stay
If you are traveling by train or commuter train, there is no better hotel "Lovech", which is not far from the railway station! If you are in your car, it will also be quite convenient - there is parking here. Cost - from 2,446 rubles per night in a double room with breakfast.
Other options include the Old City Hotel, located in the very center of Ryazan (from 3,129 rubles per night). Ryazan is located a kilometer from the main attractions and is highly appreciated by guests. A room per night with breakfast will cost you about 2,361 rubles. Sleep House Ryazan - from 1,505 rubles per night in a good hotel with a high rating. This option is more suitable for those who travel by car, as it is located 4 km from the center. We also recommend the Paustovsky Park Hotel away from the bustle of the city (19 km from the city) - it offers comfortable accommodation with an amazing view of the Ryazan pine forest for 2,800 rubles per night.
You can also consider hostels near the city center - you can walk to the main attractions on foot. An overnight stay at the Aison hostel will cost from 450 to 900 rubles.
You can find decent apartments on Airbnb starting at RUB 1,000 per night. For example, rent a cozy apartment in the historical center next to the Kremlin for 2,111 rubles. Another convenient option is an apartment for 1,440 rubles, a 15-minute drive from the Kremlin.
What sights of Ryazan to see
Ryazan Kremlin
This is the most ancient part of Ryazan, a whole historical and architectural reserve, which stands on a high hill, surrounded by two rivers and a dry moat. The entrance to the territory of the Kremlin is free, you can just walk and admire the monuments of history and culture of the 11th-19th centuries.
There are museums here, they are located in Oleg's palace, the singing building, the mob's hotel and the consistory building. I recommend visiting all of them. The cost of a ticket to one museum is from 100 to 150 rubles, all five expositions will cost 550 rubles. True, they are now closed for visits, follow the news on the site.
Oleg's palace deserves special attention - the most grandiose building of the Kremlin with windows as if from a fairytale tower and colored platbands.
In general, the Kremlin and its buildings are striking in size. For example, you can go to the Assumption Cathedral and see how huge and majestic it is.
The best time to visit the Kremlin is summer. And to see all the natural beauty of the reserve, you must definitely come here at sunset time.
Cathedral park
After walking through the territory of the Kremlin, you can walk across the Glebovsky Bridge and get to the Cathedral Park. From here, from the hill, there are breathtaking views of the temples and rivers of Ryazan. It is in this park that there is a bronze monument to Sergei Yesenin. Work on it was carried out for 10 years, and the monument to Sergei Yesenin was opened on a round date - the 80th anniversary of the poet's birth. Newlyweds and official delegations often come to him to be photographed.
Monument "Mushrooms with eyes"
This amusing figure is located on the pedestrian Lenin Street, next to house 24. It is better to walk here in the early morning, before crowds of tourists have surrounded it from all sides. The monument was opened not so long ago - in 2013. His sketch won In Ryazan, a monument "Mushrooms with eyes" appeared in the competition for the best symbol of the city based on the saying "And we have mushrooms with eyes in Ryazan."
Lenin Street
We continue to walk along the main street of the city, which was originally called Astrakhanskaya. The most spectacular historical buildings are located on Lenin Street: the University of Culture and Arts, the former Nobility Assembly (now the Regional Duma and the Wedding Palace are located here), a court, merchant houses, a hotel of the 19th century.
The street is also famous for the fact that for more than 20 years a local resident by the name of Joseph, for a symbolic fee of 3 rubles, weighs everyone on an accurate medical scale with a lever - he helps his fellow countrymen and tourists to monitor their health. Joseph himself says that during his work every resident of Ryazan weighed at least once. Also, many share with Joseph their experiences and anxieties, calling him a "folk psychologist."
Space Museum
On Voznesenskaya Street in Ryazan, there is a house associated with the life of the father of Russian cosmonautics Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. But we recommend visiting another place - the K. E. Tsiolkovsky Museum, or the Museum of the History of Cosmonautics, in the village of Izhevsk, which is an hour and a half drive from Ryazan. You can get there by car, as well as by bus or minibus from the Prioksky bus station.
The nominal cost of the entrance ticket is 30 rubles for adults, 20 rubles for students, schoolchildren can enter for free. In the museum, you can independently walk through the halls and get acquainted with exhibits that tell about the history of Soviet cosmonautics and the discoveries of the scientist himself. The tour will cost from 300 to 600 rubles. The museum also offers its visitors master classes and educational programs for children.
Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the museum is temporarily closed. It is better to check the information on the website before the trip.
Village Konstantinovo
Without visiting this museum-reserve, your impressions of Ryazan will be incomplete. The village of Konstantinovo, located 40 km from Ryazan, is the birthplace of Sergei Yesenin, one of the most beloved poets of Soviet times. In 1964, a memorial house-museum of Yesenin was opened here with expositions and exhibitions dedicated to the life and work of the poet. Only 20 years later this place became the state museum-reserve of Yesenin.
You can visit the estate of the poet's parents, where you will be greeted by a snow-white Russian stove with 19th century household utensils and family photographs on the walls. By the centenary of Sergei Yesenin, a zemstvo primary school was restored on the territory of the reserve, from which the future poet graduated with a certificate of honor. Now the expositions are closed to visitors, you can follow the news in the group on the social network "VKontakte".
And, of course, Konstantinovo is famous for its natural beauty - vast green meadows and birch groves. They are beautiful in all seasons of the year, and you can spend a pleasant whole day here.
Where else to go in Ryazan
Historic city streets
In addition to the already mentioned Lenin Street, it is worth strolling along Pochtovaya, Sobornaya, Voznesenskaya and Pavlova streets and falling in love with Ryazan antiquity with wooden houses. Around are birch and linden alleys, which excite with their honey smell in June. On these streets of Ryazan, you find yourself in the atmosphere of a carefree summer from childhood - when there are no sorrows and you can freely drink clean water from a water pump around the corner.
House-estate of academician Pavlov
This is a historical museum, and it is worth ordering an excursion to listen to the story about the life of the academician and his family, to get acquainted with the history of the things that surrounded him. It will be interesting for both adults and children. Outside, the building of the museum is also worth seeing: the two-story wooden house has been preserved in excellent condition.
Museum of the History of Ryazan Lollipop
The museum has three small rooms with exhibits dedicated to sugar business and tea drinking. You will find out where sugar was first produced and the history of the traditional delicacy - cockerel lollipop. It also hosts master-classes on caramel making and painting of candies, which you can take with you later. By the way, you will receive a lollipop as a gift immediately at the entrance to the museum.
What to bring from Ryazan
Treats
The best place to buy edible souvenirs is the Candy Museum, which we described above. Without visiting the museum, you can immediately go to the shop and the teahouse, where you should definitely treat yourself to loafs (thin pancakes with milk) with different fillings and buy sugar candies and handmade chocolates with images of the city. The price is affordable: two loafs cost 100 rubles, a lollipop - from 25 rubles, chocolate - from 100 rubles.
Products made of wood and birch bark
These can be useful objects in everyday life or just cute trinkets. You can find them in countless Ryazan souvenir shops or bring them with you from Konstantinovo. The choice is great: handmade mirrors framed with birch bark, wooden combs, salt shakers and pepper shakers made of fragrant wood, birch bark boxes.
