Where to stay
Accommodation in Yaroslavl is not too expensive. Park Inn by Radisson will ask for from 2,800 rubles for a standard room to 6,000 for a suite. A nice loft in the cultural and historical center of the city will cost 3,840 rubles per day (note: thanks to the contactless key transfer, it will be convenient for you to enter and exit). There are also simpler apartments (you will need to pay only 2,200 rubles per night), but they are also located in the very heart of Yaroslavl.
What sights of Yaroslavl to see
Yaroslavl is a beautiful city with a thousand-year history. Its historic center is even recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is still an integral historical fabric, many boulevards and trees. In addition, a few years ago, a design code was introduced in the central district and advertising was removed from the facades of buildings, so now it has become much more pleasant to admire the architectural monuments. Although it must be admitted that the problem of Olga Mazanova, a member of the UNESCO Chair in Yaroslavl: “In the historical center, controversial monuments appear, while the monuments of history, architecture and culture are crumbling”, the preservation of cultural heritage is still acute.
House of the merchant Kuznetsov and the museum of the history of Yaroslavl
The best place to start exploring the city. The former mansion of the merchant Kuznetsov has preserved the atmosphere of the 19th century with its state rooms and wide staircases. Inside there is a small museum where you can learn about the history of Yaroslavl.
Governor's House and Yaroslavl Art Museum
The largest regional art museum. The main exhibition is located in the former imperial traveling palace. Here you can see paintings by Perov, Bryullov, Kramskoy, Repin and Aivazovsky. Separately, it is necessary to mention the magnificent collection of art of the 20th century, which presents the masters of the Russian avant-garde, socialist realism and the Soviet underground.
Metropolitan Chambers and Museum of Old Russian Art (branch of the Yaroslavl Art Museum)
An excellent example of ancient Russian stone architecture and the former residence of the Rostov metropolitans. At present, the Yaroslavl Art Museum is located in the Metropolitan Chambers, where masterpieces of church painting are presented. Among them is the priceless icon of the Savior the Almighty. The beginning of the XIII century. Yaroslavl Art Museum, Yaroslavl "Savior the Almighty", painted in the first half of the XIII century.
Sorokina's House and the Museum of Foreign Art (a branch of the Yaroslavl Art Museum)
Already in our time, the house of the merchant Sorokina was transferred to the Yaroslavl Art Museum. The exposition collected samples of the cultural heritage of the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany, and Eastern countries. Even if you are not going to enter the museum itself, at least appreciate the well-preserved decor of the main facade in the style of mature classicism. Or visit the Governor's Garden of Exotic Plants, where cherry blossoms bloom in spring and French roses in summer.
Church of the Nativity
The graceful white church with black domes was closed during the Soviet era, and now there are occasional divine services. You won't be able to get inside, but be sure to admire the facade and the carved white-stone porch.
Vlasyevskaya tower and Znamenskaya church
The old medieval ensemble is often seen as one attraction. The Vlasyevskaya tower is much older than the Znamenskaya church, and used to be part of the fortifications of the Zemlyanoy city. Later, a wooden chapel was added to the tower.
Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery
Many tourists and even some Yaroslavl residents, seeing the fortress walls, mistake them for the Kremlin. But this is not true. The original Yaroslavl Kremlin was located at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers and burned down at one time. Therefore, what is often called the Kremlin in guidebooks is in fact the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, where at the end of the 18th century the only surviving copy of the Lay of Igor's Host was discovered.
Now there is no longer a functioning monastery on the territory. Nevertheless, many monuments of ancient architecture are concentrated here, including the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Church of the Yaroslavl Miracle Workers, the Holy Gates, the Refectory Chamber, the cell building and the chapel of Tryphon of Rostov. Tickets are sold right at the entrance, where you can order a sightseeing tour (just keep in mind that part of the exposition may be closed in winter). The friendly bear Masha also lives on the territory. Usually you can visit her, she loves company very much.
If you want to take beautiful photos, you definitely need to climb the bell tower, which was recently restored. From there, there are magnificent bird's-eye views of the city. Another good vantage point is the Ferris wheel near the Millennium Exhibition Center.
Kazan women's monastery
One of the two active city monasteries is visible from afar. The Kazan Cathedral and the Intercession Church are available for general visits. In the cell building on the side of Pervomayskaya Street, a refectory (which should not be overlooked in any case) and a bookstore are open for everyone. And next to the Kazan Cathedral you can find a stall with monastery baked goods.
Assumption Cathedral and the Monument to the Holy Trinity
It is believed that this is where the history of Yaroslavl began. Previously, there was the first Yaroslavl stone temple, which was blown up in 1937, but it was decided to recreate it for the thousandth anniversary of the city. Inside you can see the ancient icon of John the Baptist and the relics of the saints. Nearby there is a sculptural group "Trinity" (tourists often take pictures next to it) and Yaroslavl Strelka, where you can take a walk and eat ice cream.
What sights to see in the Yaroslavl region
Not far from Yaroslavl are other cities of Ancient Rus with ancient temples and fortresses - Rostov the Great and Uglich.
Rostov Kremlin (Rostov Museum-Reserve)
The former residence of the bishops of the Rostov-Yaroslavl diocese, where the films "Ivan Vasilyevich Changes His Profession", "Boris Godunov" and "My Affectionate and Tender Beast" were filmed. The visiting card of the Kremlin is the Assumption Cathedral, which is a bit similar in architecture to the Moscow Cathedral of the same name.
In addition to it, it is worth seeing other monuments that have survived to this day and are part of the ensemble of the Rostov Kremlin: the building of the Judgment Order, the White (Dining) and Red Chambers, the Holy Gates, Samuil's Corps, the Churches of Odigitria, John the Theologian, the Savior on Seny (or, as it is also called, the Savior Not Made by Hands), Gregory the Theologian, the Gate Church of the Resurrection and beautiful ancient towers.
Rostov Borisoglebsky Monastery
The majestic complex of ancient buildings makes an incredible impression. In Soviet times, there was first a local history museum, and then a folk museum, where you could see samples of ancient Russian painting and church utensils. Now the monastery, along with the Rostov Kremlin, is part of the Rostov Museum-Reserve. If you are traveling by car, at the same time appreciate the no less distinctive Trinity-Sergius Varnitsky Monastery.

Former estate of merchants Kekins
An imposing merchant's mansion, where the interiors of the rooms of the 19th century have been restored and original items belonging to the wealthy Kekin family are presented. After restoration in 2008, the building opened the Museum of Russian Merchants, which is best visited with a guide so as not to miss many interesting details.
Ensemble of the Uglich Kremlin
The Kremlin in the usual sense of the word has not survived in Uglich, but on its former territory there are several remarkable monuments: the Transfiguration and Epiphany Cathedrals, the Prince's Chambers, the Church of Demetrius on the Blood and the building of the City Duma.
Where else to go in Yaroslavl
Drama Theater named after F. Volkova
When planning a trip to Yaroslavl, do not miss the opportunity to go to the first Russian theater, where the classics and avant-garde are now being staged. Ticket prices are low (especially in comparison with Moscow ones) and stay in the region of 100-1,000 rubles. At the same time, you can take a picture in the interiors of the early 20th century, and if the latter interested you greatly, order a paid tour of the building.

Part of the exposition is dedicated to the founder of the museum, the patron of the arts Vadim Orlov, who in the late 1980s began collecting Russian and foreign porcelain of the 18th – 20th centuries. Actually, this collection forms the basis of the museum. The exposition is divided into three parts: porcelain from Russian and European factories, silver and cast iron products from the Ural foundries.
Yaroslavl Planetarium. V. Tereshkova
In a small regional planetarium, you can admire the starry sky and listen to interesting lectures. And all this at fairly affordable prices: the entrance ticket costs only 100 rubles, and the excursion will cost 600.
Cultural and social center TEXTIL
Several years ago, a modern cultural cluster was opened on the territory of the former Yaroslavl Big Manufactory. However, so far this is a seasonal site that only works during events.
But not far away, right inside the operating enterprise, which dates back to 1725, the same team opened a very cool "Factory Museum". You can go there for an individual excursion and learn more about the times when the manufacture lived and flourished. There, according to the schedule, there is a Radio Factory - a walk in headphones, an audio performance “Radio Factory”.
Coffee house "Morning"
All lovers of specialty coffee are worth a visit here. From time to time, the guys hold educational meetings for guests: cuppings, tea ceremonies, tastings (only these events should be found out in advance on Instagram). Visitors praise cereals, eggs benedict on a croissant with bacon, cheese cakes and desserts.

Huge selection of beer (draft and bottled, foreign and craft) and delicious snacks. Be sure to sample the burgers and cheese balls. Just keep in mind that the bar is small and very noisy.
What to bring from Yaroslavl
Majolica
Due to the large amount of red clay in the local soil, Yaroslavl has long been famous as a center of arts and crafts. But only in 1992, the famous Yaroslavl majolica - glossy painted ceramics, de facto became the symbol of the city - appeared in the future “Pavlova and Shepelev Majolica Workshop” (Yunosti Street, 17A).
Yaroslavl bells
For many years in a row, beautiful melodic bells for churches and temples have been cast on the territory of Yaroslavl. Therefore, you can bring your loved ones a cute little bell as a souvenir. Very beautiful ones are sold, for example, in the shop at the Museum "Music and Time" (Volzhskaya Embankment, 33A).
The Bears
An ancient legend tells that the bear was directly related to the formation of Yaroslavl. It is believed that this very beast was defeated by the founder of the city, Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Therefore, the bear is depicted on the city coat of arms. By the way, even just walking around Yaroslavl, you will come across many monuments to the clubfoot (perhaps the nicest one is on the pedestrian part of Kirov Street). So souvenirs with bear motives would be more than appropriate.
Alcoholic drinks
Not so long ago, the Yaroslavl Distillery resumed production of alcoholic beverages. The Yaroslavl Distillery, one of the oldest enterprises in the city, resumed its work. The factory even opened a beautiful and modern wine glass "TSEKH". The place turned out to be extremely soulful: the bar and counter are made of "native" factory bricks. There you can not only taste and buy local products, but also taste branded liqueurs and snacks.
