How it works
Say no to annual planning
It would seem, how is this possible? After all, the annual plan is the basis for the work of both small and large organizations around the world. The authors of the book believe that, despite its popularity, the annual planning method is actually not very effective. So, if you dig deeper and analyze this period, we will notice that often we work most effectively only by the end of the year, in anticipation of reporting and summing up the results for the whole year. And most of the rest of the time we often allow ourselves to relax, because the year is so long!
Instead, Brian Moran and Michael Lennington suggest switching to a 12-week cycle, during which you simply won't have enough time to waste.
A short year gives you enough time to complete everything planned, but you will always feel the need for action and maintain tone.
Benefits of 12-week planning
- It's more predictable. After all, it is much easier to predict the development of events in the coming weeks than for the whole year ahead.
- The 12 week plan is clearly focused. The list of tasks to be completed is much smaller than the annual list, and this helps to avoid dispersion and waste of time.
- The 12-week plan has a fundamentally different structure.
In our experience, most plans are written with the unspoken purpose of simply making a good plan. Often they are placed in a nice folder, and this is where their execution ends.
A correctly drawn up plan is very important, because without a planned scenario of actions, we will not be able to achieve specific goals. The authors cite eight main, in their opinion, elements that most of all affect the quality and effectiveness of any undertaking:
- Vision.
- Planning.
- Control.
- Measurement and evaluation.
- Use of time.
- A responsibility.
- Keeping promises.
- Revealing your potential every time you act.
And they give practical recommendations and examples of the implementation of each stage. Thanks to this, you can really do a lot more in 12 weeks.
It's not that hard to become successful! In the end, you either succeed here and now, or you never succeed.
This is not a handbook, this is a guide with ready-made tools that help you create a convincing vision of the future (a clear picture of what you want in life), define your goals, learn how to properly allocate time, not be afraid of responsibility and be honest with yourself.
