Apple Mail's built-in mailer does its job pretty well and provides access to many features. However, people tend to always strive for perfection and some users constantly try different tools or use several at the same time. We recently told you about the best email clients for Mac and mentioned Mail Pilot, which was in beta at the time. Recently, the public release took place and from now on Mail Pilot is available in the Mac App Store.

Mail Pilot is an email application designed primarily for managing and organizing to-do lists. The developers are positioning Mail Pilot as a tool to help you reach inbox zero. The Mac version of Mail Pilot can be used as a standalone application or in conjunction with the iOS version. Both versions, by the way, cost quite an impressive $ 10 each. Following the GTD philosophy, Mail Pilot offers immediate decision-making on incoming and outgoing tasks. Thanks to the user-friendly interface and interaction mechanism, it is very easy to do all this.

Concept

Immediately after the initial setup, Mail Pilot will download all your mail and present it as a tape with empty indicator circles next to each message. This approach will allow you to quickly understand what tasks require your reaction and further actions. Using hotkeys will greatly simplify the workflow: you can easily determine which messages need to be viewed, which ones need to be returned later, and which ones should be moved to a specific folder or archive.

Interface

The design of Mail Pilot is very minimal and clean, which allows you to concentrate solely on processing your tasks. To some, it may seem dull and inconspicuous (especially for Airmail users), but I think this is the right solution, it's much more convenient.

Also, among the functions of Mail Pilot there is support for lists and folders. Lists are very handy for all sorts of small tasks and short-term projects. Folders, on the other hand, will be useful for storing materials related to large and long-term projects. Optionally, you can set a reminder for emails that you want to return to later. Another cool feature of Mail Pilot is Set aside - put aside. With its help, you can postpone non-urgent tasks (will be displayed on a separate tab) so that they do not interfere with reaching inbox zero.

Accounts

Mail Pilot works with all traditional IMAP accounts, ensuring secure synchronization with the server and other clients. Here is a complete list of supported services:

  • Gmail
  • iCloud
  • Yahoo!
  • Aol
  • Rackspace
  • Outlook.com
  • Google Apps

iOS version

The iOS version of Mail Pilot has succumbed to harsh criticism from users. Numerous bugs did not allow to make the same impression as the Mac version, which is really good. For this reason, the developers decided during the update not to port Mail Pilot from OS X, but to completely rewrite it from scratch. Therefore, soon we will see Mail Pilot 2 for iPhone and iPad. Looking at the Mac version of the app, you can expect Mail Pilot for iOS to be a worthy alternative to the very popular Mailbox.

Considering the number of functions and their good implementation, Mail Pilot is a decent email application focused on working with to-do lists. The only question is, are you ready to part with ten dollars for it;)
