INFOGRAPHICS: How to choose a camera

All kinds of cameras I didn’t have. This is my father's Kiev, then there was the most common Samsung film camera, Polaroid with cassettes, the first digital Sony and, finally, the first Nikon F60 film SLR. After that, we switched to the Canon EOS 350 digital SLR, which was replaced by the newer Canon EOS 550 and we stopped there. Because we realized that we take the main photographs … with our phones. And all these DSLRs, semi-professional and professional cameras are needed not for show-off, but for work. Unless, of course, your work is closely related to photography.

At first, we were really experimenting with different tricks with great enthusiasm. This was especially true for a film SLR. But when we realized that we had never used a DSLR with us on the trip, it was decided to sell it, since all the photos were taken with smartphones. Now I understand that if I buy a camera, it will only be a relatively simple one, and a good and expensive SLR camera will appear in our family only when there really is a need for it. If you are still wondering if you need an expensive camera or if a simpler camera will do for a start, try to walk the path along with this infographic;)

So, the first question you should ask yourself before buying a camera is what exactly are you planning to use it for?

Possible answers:

  • You travel a lot.
  • You make your living by photography.
  • You prefer to take pictures from afar, watching what is happening.
  • You are a partygoer.
  • You have a happy family whose members are constantly taking pictures of each other.
  • Traveler options

If you travel to cities with a backpack, then a camera on your smartphone or a digital camera with weather protection will be enough. Both are lightweight and compact. And the weatherproof camera is great for outings.

If you are traveling to cities to relax, then your option is a mirrorless camera, which is a cross between a DSLR camera (lighter in weight, but almost as good in photo quality) and a compact digital camera; DSLR or Sight-Shot Compact Digital Camera.

If you are more into outdoor activities such as snorkeling or hiking, then a waterproof diving camera or a DSLR camera is for you for capturing beautiful mountain landscapes.

    Professional options

I think that professionals already know what kind of cameras they need. And infographic creators offer a DSLR camera as an option.

If you are photographing documentation or cityscapes, a mirrorless digital camera should suffice.

    Party lover options

Parties are different. If you're heading to a pool party, a waterproof camera is the obvious choice. Optional options are photos on smartphones or a mirrorless digital camera.

    Family options for amateur photographers

A compact digital camera or mirrorless camera is suitable for shooting birthdays or family parties or school plays. And some digital cameras have a “Kids and Animals” shooting mode. And I must point out that this mode works almost flawlessly;)

Whether the proposed options are a comfortable and high-quality offer for you is up to you. But when you decide to choose a digital camera, do not chase after fashion and price (this is the way it is in our circle). When buying a DSLR, even a semi-professional camera, you must understand that in order to fully use it, you need to learn how to work with it. Otherwise, in inept hands, it is no more useless than the simplest and cheapest digital camera. An inept amateur photographer with an expensive SLR camera resembles a monkey who does not know where to stick his glasses.
