To find out which site or extension your computer uses to mine cryptocurrencies, use the built-in tool from Google.
Cryptocurrency mining is a resource-intensive process. You will be convinced of this when you go to a site with a built-in web miner. The computer will start to slow down or restart due to overheating of the processor.
Intuition and Windows Task Manager suggest that mining is done through Chrome. However, you will not be able to figure out exactly where the miner is located: on the website or in a browser extension.
How to calculate a web miner
Open your browser and go to Task Manager. To do this, press Shift + Esc or open it through the menu: click on the three dots in the upper right corner, select "More Tools" → "Task Manager".
For an illustrative example, I used a test site from the staff of the Badpackets portal, which has a built-in CoinHive web miner.
The task manager shows all processes, open tabs and extensions, as well as the level of memory consumption and processor load. Identifying a web miner is easy - look at the CPU load. Once you've figured out which site is mining, close it. To do this, select the tab and click "End Process".
Miners are hiding not only on websites. Browser extensions can also secretly mine cryptocurrency.
You can find an infected extension by looking at the CPU load. Double click on the name of the extension, uninstall it, and then restart your browser.
It so happens that the miner is loaded into an iframe. In this case, Task Manager does not show which extension is infected. To find out, click on the subframe in the list of processes that use the CPU. The control menu will open and the desired extension will be highlighted. Delete it and restart your browser.
