The account password is one of those things that everyone knows about but continues to neglect. Especially for those who are too lazy to enter their password every time in Windows 10, Microsoft has added a new PIN protection feature. This is a kind of compromise between safety and convenience.
Is it generally safe?
As mentioned above, a PIN is the golden mean between security and convenience. Yes, this protection option is less reliable than, say, fingerprint or retina scan authorization. But if you do not want to spend money on additional devices, then a PIN code is ideal.
Firstly, it will be much faster to enter a PIN code than using any other authorization method. Secondly, unlike password protection, attackers will only gain access to a specific computer, and not to all of your devices, if they do find out the PIN.
How to turn on
Enabling this great feature is as easy as using it. We go to the menu "Start" → "Options" → "Accounts" → "Login Options". Find the "PIN" section and click "Add".
We will be asked to verify our identity by entering the account password, then prompted to add a PIN. The possible number of characters exceeds all reasonable limits - I tried a 20-digit password, but it is unlikely that anyone would bother so much.
From now on, when you turn on the computer, wake up from sleep mode and in other situations when authorization is required, along with the account password, you can use the PIN code.
How to change
If it becomes necessary to change the PIN code, then everything is done in the same menu. The familiar “Add” button will change to “Change”, with the help of which we can set a new PIN-code after entering the old one.
How to reset
You have forgotten your PIN, it never happens to anyone. It doesn't matter: we log in using the account password and in the "Login Options" menu, in the "PIN-code" section, click on "I don't remember my PIN-code". Here, after confirming our identity with a password, we can set a new PIN-code.
How to disable
Disabling the PIN is not an obvious point, but here, if you know, everything is quite simple. To remove the PIN-code, you need to go through the reset procedure from the previous paragraph, but instead of entering a new PIN-code, just click on the "Cancel" button.
