Many people prefer a laptop to a desktop computer or all-in-one because of its portability. But such devices need constant care, otherwise they quickly deteriorate. The life hacker shares the rules that you should follow in order for your laptop to serve you for a long time.

How to extend the life of a laptop

1. Observe the temperature regime

Do not hold the laptop on your lap or on a blanket; this will block the air from reaching the ventilation slots. If you often work sitting on a couch or lying down, buy a special stand.

Also, avoid hypothermia of the device. After being in severe frost, the laptop should not turn on immediately, give it at least half an hour to warm up.

2. Don't eat with your laptop

Spilled liquid instantly penetrates the keyboard of the device, and food crumbs fall between the keys. As a result, typing on the keyboard will be problematic, since stuck together keys will give out not one letter at a time, but several at once. It is also possible for some keys to get stuck due to crumbs stuck under them.

If you spill tea or coffee on the keyboard, immediately unplug the device, remove the battery and take the laptop to a service center before the liquid gets on the motherboard and damages it.

3. Clean your laptop regularly

The keyboard and fan trap all the dust in the air. To clean the laptop keyboard from dirt, you need to turn off the computer, turn it upside down and, holding firmly with both hands, shake it several times. Remove the rest of the debris with a vacuum cleaner. Then wipe the keyboard surface with a damp cloth. Wipe down the outside of the laptop as well.

Another dust collector is the screen. First wipe it off with a soft, damp cloth (you can slightly moisten it with a cleaning agent: distilled water and vinegar in a 50/50 ratio). Do not wipe the screen with a paper towel, it usually leaves marks in the form of small pieces of paper. It is best to use a cotton cloth. It is also not recommended to use aggressive substances (acetone and other solvents) to wipe the screen.

4. Avoid shaking and impact

Harsh bumps and jolts can damage the hard drive, cooling system, motherboard, and other components. The life hacker advises purchasing a special laptop bag equipped with a protective layer.

5. Do general cleaning from time to time

One or two times a year you need to do a general cleaning. Basically, the laptop itself will tell you that it's time to clean it: one day you will find that the fans of your laptop are constantly gaining momentum, and the device itself heats up like an electric oven. These are all sure signs that it is time to clean up.

To clean the inside of the laptop, you will have to disassemble it, but for this it is best to use the services of a service center.

6. Use antivirus software

Surfing the Internet and using third-party flash drives are often the cause of viruses. The infected computer usually freezes, the virus infects system and personal files, and can get to the boot sector of the hard disk. To prevent it from coming to this, use antivirus programs.
