How to protect suede shoes

Before you go out for the first time in new suede shoes, treat them with a special impregnation to protect them from dirt and moisture. These are usually sprays that are suitable for both natural and artificial suede.

Before applying, read the instructions on the package and test the product on a small, inconspicuous area to make sure it does not leave marks. When you get home, lightly brush over your shoes with a suede brush to remove any stuck-on dust.

What to do if your suede shoes get wet

If you get your suede shoes or boots wet, take them off as soon as possible and let them dry naturally. Never dry the suede with a hair dryer or place it on a battery. High temperatures can discolor the material or deform, such as wrinkling.

Instead, blot the wet pair with a clean towel and then push it inside a shoe raiser. If you don't have them, use crumpled paper towels. Leave your shoes in a dry, well-ventilated place. When dry, gently brush it off.

How to remove stains from suede

As soon as something gets on your shoes that might stain, blot the area with a paper towel or tissue. Then sprinkle with baking soda and let sit for a few hours until the moisture has completely evaporated, for example overnight. Then shake off the remaining baking soda and work over the spot with a suede eraser or a nail file. You can also use a special suede shoe cleaner.

When you need to remove a stubborn stain, first scrub it gently. For example, a special suede brush or, in extreme cases, a soft toothbrush. If the pile sticks together, steam it for a few seconds, and then with a nail file or brush. A gag eraser, available from art stores, is also suitable for removing stains. Lightly rub the stain with it, and then go over with a brush.

The most important rule is to be gentle. To avoid damaging the suede, brush only in the direction of the pile, not back and forth. If all else fails, take your shoes in for repair. Perhaps a professional cleaning will help to restore it to its original appearance.
