If the automatic restart after installing the latest Windows 10 updates is bothering you, here are some simple tips to help you.
Windows 10 likes to reboot after installing fresh updates. The system does not consider the user's activity or the computer's automatic occupation of any tasks. Just remember the case of professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player Eric Flom, whose broadcast was disrupted by a forced system reboot.
Windows 10 updates are required. But the user can influence the situation:
- You can pause updates while downloading and installing them, but it will be difficult to keep track of when the system starts updating. This option is not very convenient.
- You can set the operating system to a time at which it will not initiate a computer restart.
Changing the period of use of the computer
The simplest solution to managing the time that your computer restarts is to set the active period. The period of activity allows you to set the time period in which the user uses the computer.
Setting the active period
1. Open the start menu.
2. Click on the gear icon "Settings".
3. Select Update & Security, Windows Update will open.
4. Find the column "Change the period of activity", set the period of time in which you usually are at the computer.
By default, the maximum length of the set time period is 12 hours, but if the operating system participates in the Windows Insider program, then the interval is 18 hours.
After saving the values, a reboot may be required.
Changing the reboot time
Also in "Windows Update" you can set the system restart parameters, which allow you to set the time and day of the restart. But it's not that simple:
- You can configure a system restart only when the computer needs to be restarted, that is, it is about to install an update.
- The option is deeply hidden, and it is impossible to configure it for permanent use.
Still, this feature is useful. For example, if you saw that the computer is going to restart, and the work is not finished yet, go to the "Restart options" and specify the desired time and day of the system update. To do this, repeat the first three steps from the Active Hour Setting Guide and click on Restart Options.
In the advanced options of Windows Update, you can check the box next to Use my login information to automatically complete device setup after upgrade. This parameter is used for the operating system to update itself and apply the changes without user intervention.
Disable reboot via Task Scheduler
If you do not have a stable work schedule at the computer or you sit at it for more than 12 hours, and there is no desire to install unstable Windows Insider builds, then you will need to use the Windows Task Scheduler.
The Task Scheduler can be opened in different ways, but we will focus on the most popular ones.
The first way … Right-click on the Start Menu. Find the item "Control Panel". From the Control Panel, select the System and Security menu. Find the "Administration" submenu and click on "Task Schedule". The Task Scheduler will open.
Second way … Right-click on the Start Menu. Find the "Computer Management" item and select it. In the utilities, there is a submenu for the task scheduler.
Third way … The easiest way to find anything on your computer is to use search. Click on the magnifying glass icon in the task manager and enter the desired phrase.
1. In Task Scheduler, open the Task Library, select the Windows folder, and look for UpdateOrchestrator.
2. A list of files responsible for event triggers will appear.
3. Find the Reboot item, right-click on it and change the status to "Disable".
Most likely, this will solve the problem of automatic restart of Windows 10. Please note that sometimes the system will re-set the status to "Active". Then you will need to repeat the procedure.
Disable reboot by replacing the file
If disabling the restart through the task scheduler did not help, you can use another method.
1. Open explorer and follow the path
C: WindowsSystem32TasksMicrosoftWindowsUpdateOrchestrator
2. Select the Reboot file, press the F2 key and rename the file to Reboot.bak.
3. Right click on an empty space of the window and create a folder. Press F2 and rename it Reboot.
If you change your mind, you can always delete the new folder and rename Reboot.bak to Reboot.
