In fact, in the Russian language there were from the history of spelling fluctuations equal verbs to torment and torment.

However, in the process of unification of spelling in the middle of the last century, the verb to suffer in some sense had to be sacrificed. The authoritative spelling dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, edited by V. V. Lopatin, recognizes the Russian spelling dictionary as permissible only in its present tense forms, which sound different from the corresponding versions of the verb suffer: I suffer, I suffer, I suffer, I suffer, I suffer, I suffer. Nevertheless, in strict literary speech, they are preferred. How right: tormented or tormented only to torment, torment, torment, torment.

As for the initial form - to torment, it does not correspond to Vowels in the infinitive (indefinite form) before the "-ty" of the modern spelling norm. You will not find this verb in the above academic vocabulary.

The same applies to the past tense: only options are permissible: tormented, tormented, tormented. The form was tormented by an erroneous - after all, in pronunciation it almost does not differ from tormented.
