The Mac display brightness scale has 16 divisions. With the help of the ⇧ ⌥ combination, it can be expanded to 64, but in complete darkness, even at 1/64, the brightness still remains too high - you want to lower it. This is very easy to do.

The secret is to use a small free utility called Shady. It settles in the menu bar after installation and performs one and only function - it darkens the screen.

Clicking on the icon opens a menu with a slider that adjusts the level of dimming and a power button. There is another adjustment option: if you turn on the display of the icon in the dock, then by clicking on it with the arrows, you can change the shading level, and with the S key, activate Shady. This will change the icon in the menu bar to a down / down louver symbol.

In fact, the brightness remains the same, but the image on the screen is darkened by the overlay of a semi-transparent layer. This, however, does not change the essence.

With Shady, you can work quite calmly even in complete darkness, without straining your eyes. Better, of course, to use at least some kind of light source, but in cases where this cannot be done, Shady will help you out.
