Most of us are most productive in the evening or even at night. And to relieve the eyes of unnecessary strain when working on a Mac, enthusiasts have come up with many different utilities. From the well-known one, which changes the color temperature throughout the day, to Shady, which allows you to darken the screen and thereby further reduce the brightness. The new Lumen tool pursues the same goals, but achieves them in a slightly different way.

The utility has absolutely no settings, and the only item it adds to the menu bar after installation is a temporary pause. The simplest way to explain how Lumen works is with the-g.webp

Yes, you got it right. The utility distinguishes whether dark or light colors prevail on the screen, and instantly adjusts the brightness level for any changes. After viewing light pages in a browser and switching to a text editor where you have night theme enabled, Lumen will automatically increase brightness and vice versa.

All this works quite well: the response is fast, and the adjustment occurs within small limits, but just enough to make work in the evening more comfortable. The developer points out that Lumen learns on the basis of a special algorithm: it remembers how, when changing interfaces from dark to light, you adjust the brightness yourself, and then repeats your actions. So keep in mind: after a while, the utility will work better.

The Mac's built-in brightness-based brightness control is a great help, but at dusk or dark it is of little use. Lumen, on the other hand, perfectly corrects this flaw. Who knows, maybe Apple will add a similar feature in future versions of macOS.
