At IFA 2016, Samsung unveiled a new generation of smartwatches: Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier.
Unlike many other manufacturers, Samsung has been actively experimenting with the look and functionality of various wearables over the past years. Through trial and error last year, the company managed to release the Gear S2 smartwatch. The design close to the classic and interesting features brought the device a long-awaited success. Now it's time to announce a new model - Gear S3.
Samsung took this experience into account and brought in a Swiss designer to work on the Gear S3's exterior. The result is a rather large watch with a round dial with a diameter of 46 mm. It is actually a 1.3-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 × 360 pixels.
Samsung's new smartwatch is available in two versions: Classic and Frontier. The first is made of steel, and the second is made of sturdy plastic and is positioned rather as a sports version of the Gear S3.
The watch display is protected not by sapphire, but by Corning Gorilla Glass SR +. The device has a place for a GPS module, later a version with LTE support will go on sale. The Gear S3 has a 380 mAh battery inside. According to Samsung representatives, the charge should be enough for 3-4 days of battery life. When the battery is discharged to 5%, the watch goes into economy mode and only displays the time. If you do not charge the battery, the device will turn off after 24 hours.
The watch can be controlled both through the touch screen and with the help of a movable frame around the display. Tizen developed by Samsung is used as the operating system. Gear S3's interface has been adapted to the shape of the screen and the features of the controls. The watch is equipped with all current sensors, including a barometer and an altimeter. There was also a place for the support of the Samsung Pay payment system.
The Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch will go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. Pricing will be announced at a later date, possibly with an eye on potential Apple Watch 2.
