Glass

  • Original title: Glass.
  • Director: M. Night Shyamalan.
  • Cast: James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Paulson, Anya Taylor-Joy.

The heroes of M. Night Shyamalan's films "Invincible" and "Split" meet in a psychiatric hospital. The invulnerable David Dunn must confront Kevin Crumb, a psychopath with multiple personality disorders, and a villain nicknamed Mr. Glass leads their actions.

In modern cinema, almost every major studio is trying to create a global franchise or cinematic universe. Still, the story from Shyamalan looks different. After all, initially "Invincible" did not follow the typical plots of movie comics, but rather deconstructed them. In the same way, the "Glass" crossover, rather, makes fun of the typical collisions of heroes from different paintings.

Many believe that the director was let down by ambition: he overloaded the film, and as a result, the action sags too often. And the worst thing is that it happens even in the finale. But Glass is worth watching, if only because of the stunning cast of charismatic actors: Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy as hospital patients, and Sarah Paulson as their doctor. This is already enough to appreciate the film.

Two queens

  • Original title: Mary Queen of Scots.
  • Director: Josie Rourke
  • Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, David Tennant, Guy Pearce.

Mid-16th century. A young widow, Queen Mary Stuart, returns to Scotland. She spent all her childhood in France and only returned to her homeland at the age of 18. The country is engulfed in religious strife and palace squabbles. In addition, Elizabeth I, who took the throne of the Queen of England, is considered by many to be an illegal ruler. Mary Stuart also claims the state throne, but for the final victory, each of the heroines needs support.

If you look at the trailer, the new historical drama immediately attracts attention: beautiful costumes, famous actresses, the story of the struggle between two strong women. But, unfortunately, the film itself does little to live up to expectations. The limited budget did not allow the authors to show large-scale events or beautiful balls, and the costumes are too often lost in pale lighting. Perhaps the picture could have been saved by a twisted plot, but here everything turned out to be too simple and predictable.

Fans of costume dramas "Two Queens" will most likely like it. The film is neither historically accurate nor very impressive, but it is not irritating either. Just an interesting story at a time.

Crumpet

  • Original title: Dumplin '.
  • Director: Ann Fletcher
  • Cast: Danielle MacDonald, Jennifer Aniston, Odeya Rush.

Puffy Willowdeen lives with an eternal complex, because her mother is a former beauty queen obsessed with slimness. In protest, the girl decides to take part in the next competition. And the rest follow her, whose appearance does not fit into generally accepted standards.

"Donut" is one of those films about which you can understand everything from the trailer or even a description from a couple of sentences. The simplest melodramatic comedy about accepting yourself as you are and fighting the bias of others. All plot moves are clear in advance, and jokes are based solely on clumsiness and grotesque.

Films like "Pyshka" are loved by many, because you don't have to think about them at all, and Jennifer Aniston's grimaces still look funny. But, unfortunately, there is no artistic value in it. The simplest truths are presented too head-on and caricatured, so supporters of body positivity are unlikely to be interested in such things, and opponents will only get stronger in their opinion.

Asterix and the secret potion

  • Original title: Astérix: Le secret de la potion magique.
  • Directors: Alexander Astier, Louis Clichy.
  • Cast: Christian Clavier, Guillaume Briat, Alex Luts.

Perhaps everyone knows the story of the inhabitants of the rebellious Gaulish village, whom no one could defeat because of the secret potion that gives them strength. But now the Gauls faced an unexpected misfortune: a druid, who had been brewing a magic potion for years, fell from a tree and broke his legs. Asterix and Obelix set out in search of a new druid, and at this time Caesar, having learned about the defenselessness of the village, once again goes there with a war.

Plots about resourceful Asterix and stupid but good-natured Obelix have been pleasing children and adults for decades. Someone read the original comics, someone watched cartoons, someone is familiar with the franchise thanks to feature films. But even though the authors repeat the same stories over and over again (the Gauls are trying to steal the recipe for the potion, and Caesar dreams of capturing the village), the audience continues to like them.

The new cartoon will surely delight all those who loved the previous parts. The visual range has become more modern, and the plot is still naive and entertains with cute jokes. Recommended for kids and fans of the franchise.

Interview with God

  • Original title: An Interview with God.
  • Director: Perry Lang
  • Cast: Brenton Thwaites, David Strathairn, Yael Grobglas.

Young journalist Paul writes about religion for a secular publication. His articles are not very popular, and in his personal life he is going through hard times. And now he gets a chance - to interview God himself. Or someone who calls himself that.

Director Perry Lang is best known for working on episodes of various TV series. And the full-length film of his authorship does not shine with a huge budget or the complexity of filming. But in this case it is not necessary. The viewer is offered a motion picture based primarily on dialogues and reflections. And most importantly, they offer you to think about difficult questions yourself.

"Interview with God" will appeal to fans of controversial religious topics, philosophical dilemmas and just conversational movies. But you don't need to expect the brightness of a blockbuster from him.

Wow vacation

  • Original title: Premières vacances.
  • Director: Patrick Cashier.
  • Cast: Jonathan Cohen, Camille Chamoux, Camille Cotten.

For Marion, dating on Tinder is a habit. But this is Ben's first experience, he is used to doing everything slowly and thoroughly. But, having met, this couple falls in love and immediately plans a joint vacation. The heroes go to Bulgaria, but they quickly realize that they look at rest and at life in general in completely different ways.

This film has an unusual mixed atmosphere. Judging by the trailer and the beginning of the picture, the author seems to be promising a mischievous and rude comedy about the complexities of relationships. And then everyone will have to decide whether it is pleasant for him to watch the arguments of a couple who got from comfortable France to exaggeratedly uncomfortable Bulgaria, which sometimes resembles almost the entourage of the film "Borat".

At the same time, towards the finale, the author is more and more inclined towards realism and romance, raising more serious questions. Therefore, the second part seems livelier and more interesting, but at the same time it does not fit well with the perky beginning. "Wow Vacation" is not a very deep film on the verge of comedy and melodrama, it is worth watching it exclusively in the appropriate mood.

Nowadays

  • Original title: Nuestro tiempo.
  • Director: Carlos Reygadas.
  • Cast: Carlos Reygadas, Natalia Lopez, Phil Burgers.

The famous poet Juan and his wife Esther live on the ranch. They consider their relationship to be free. But Juan is very upset when he finds out that his wife is secretly sleeping with an American riding horses. Trying to make the relationship more open is increasingly confusing all the characters.

Interest in the film is immediately attracted by the fact that the director himself played the main role here. And the image of the hero's wife went to his real wife. This turns the picture from another frank drama into an almost autobiographical statement and makes one believe that living passions are unfolding on the screen.

The film is quite difficult to understand, but fans of auteur cinema and analysis of ambiguous relationships will surely appreciate it.
