Who is postponing the weekend and why

In Russia, the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, article 112 is established. Non-working holidays 14 non-working holidays:

  • January 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 - New Year's holidays;
  • January 7 - Christmas;
  • February 23 - Defender of the Fatherland Day;
  • March 8 - International Women's Day;
  • May 1 - Spring and Labor Day;
  • May 9 - Victory Day;
  • June 12 - Day of Russia;
  • November 4 - National Unity Day.

By law, if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the day off from that day is postponed to the next working day. An exception is made for the New Year and Christmas holidays. The days off from these days are distributed by the government of the Russian Federation at its discretion.

Rest days often fill the uncomfortable voids between holidays and weekends. For example, if November 4 is Thursday, it would be logical to make Friday November 5 a day off so that Russians can schedule an extra four-day vacation.

What days will be days off and holidays in 2021

As follows from the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, the New Year holidays this year will remain long. Federation Council member Andrei Kutepov proposed to cut them due to the pandemic. This, in his opinion, should have helped the economy catch up. However, the Kremlin immediately noted that they would not do this. And this is confirmed: all weekends have been saved.

Holidays January 2 and 3 fall on Saturday and Sunday, and therefore they are postponed to Friday 5 November and 31 December, which will become days off. Instead of Saturday, February 20, the Russians will rest on Monday February 22, that is, they will receive three non-working days in a row. In addition, due to the coincidence with the weekend, the non-working day from May 1 moves to the 3rd, from the 9th to the 10th, and from June 12 to the 14th.
