Who is postponing the weekend and why

There are 14 non-working holidays in Russia:

  • January 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 - New Year's holidays;
  • January 7 - Christmas;
  • February 23 - Defender of the Fatherland Day;
  • March 8 - International Women's Day;
  • May 1 - Spring and Labor Day;
  • May 9 - Victory Day;
  • June 12 - Day of Russia;
  • November 4 - National Unity Day.

By law, if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the day off from that day is transferred to the next working day. An exception is made for the New Year and Christmas holidays. The days off from these days are distributed by the government of the Russian Federation at its discretion.

In addition, sometimes it can make some Saturdays work and at their expense lengthen the holiday time. But in 2020, we managed to do without such sacrifices.

Typically, rest days fill the awkward voids between holidays and weekends. For example, if May 9 is Thursday, it is logical to make Friday May 10 a day off so that Russians can plan a trip to their dacha or an extraordinary vacation of four days.

The Russian government approved the proposal of the Ministry of Labor to postpone the weekend from January 4 and 5, which falls on Saturday and Sunday, to May 4 and 5.

Due to the coincidence with the weekend, the non-working day from February 23 moves to the 24th, from March 8 - to the 9th, from May 9 - to the 11th.

In addition, to contain the spread, Vladimir Putin declared a non-working week from March 30 to April 5.

December 31 in 2020 - Thursday, working day. The schedule of the New Year's holidays in 2021 will become known in about 12 months, when the Ministry of Labor will decide on the transfer of the weekend to that year.

How to rest during a six-day work week

If you work six days a week, you will have fewer holidays:

  • From January 1 to January 8 (December 31, 2019 - a working day).
  • February 23rd and 24th.
  • 8 and 9 March.
  • March 30 - April 5.
  • May 1, 3 and 5, and May 9 and 10.
  • June 12 and 14.
  • November 4th.

How to extend your vacation with holidays

The Labor Code requires you to take 14 consecutive days of rest once a year. The rest of the days can be taken as you like, of course, having warned the employer about this.

So, a vacation on January 9 and 10 can extend the eight-day New Year's holidays to 12 days. Three days in May - the 6th, 7th and 8th - will also combine the weekend into a 12-day rest. In addition, vacation can be "stuck" before the three-day weekend in February, March, or after - in June. This will allow you to go to work a day later or leave a day earlier.
