Project Oxford is a Microsoft project that provides developers with machine learning algorithms. The company has already demonstrated these APIs in the comic services How-Old and TwinsOrNot, which at one time gained popularity among users. The other day they were accompanied by the Emotion Recognition service, which is able to determine the emotions of people in pictures.
The principle of operation is similar to its predecessors: you upload a photo, and machine algorithms analyze the presence of faces on it, and then determine the expected emotions by facial expressions. Taking into account the test mode of this tool, the results are often inaccurate and unexpected, due to which the novelty got the viral effect.
The algorithm analyzes the face for eight different emotions: anger, contempt, disgust, fear, joy, calmness, sadness, and surprise. The result can vary from zero to one. In addition to the prepared test images, you can upload your own. The only requirements: the sides of the square in which you want to fit the face must be at least 36 pixels, and the size of the photo must not exceed 4 MB.
In the future, the novelty will probably find application in other products of the company, as happened with How-Old, which was integrated into the Bing search engine. In addition, the Emotion API is available to third-party developers, which in the future will ensure the emergence of applications with similar functionality.
