OPPO A83 review - a new frameless for 14 thousand rubles

The entry of the Chinese company OPPO into the Russian market was perceived ambiguously. The OPPO F5 selfie expert turned out to be a good smartphone, but too expensive - 25 thousand rubles at the start of sales. This time the company brought the state employee OPPO A83 to Russia. Outwardly, the novelty practically repeats the F5 and is just as powerful, but it costs only 13,990 rubles!

Design and materials

OPPO A83 is almost like two peas in a pod similar to OPPO F5, the only difference is that the A83 does not have any design chips, while the F5 has a thin silver stripe. The smartphone has exactly the same thin body with smooth edges, exactly the same protruding camera and exactly the same protruding glass - as if it was simply put on top. In today's “streamlined” world of 2, 5D and 3D glasses, this design looks and feels unusual.

The gadget has a 5, 7-inch solid screen. It occupies almost the entire front surface, and therefore the smartphone is no more than 5.5-inch models in size. By the way, OPPO is the first large brand that brought a budget smartphone with such a screen to Russia at a price of up to 15 thousand rubles.

The case is plastic, but one-piece - you can't get the battery. The material is of high quality: the device does not bend, does not creak, it tolerates the proximity of keys and small things in a pocket well. But the buttons give out budget: they are plastic and loose. If you shake your smartphone, you can hear how they dangle. However, there is nothing wrong with that, because it is not the buttons themselves on the board that are dangling, but the external elements.

Screen

In devices of the budget segment, you can clearly see what the manufacturer saves on. In the case of OPPO A83, this is the screen.

The quality of the matrix is not bad, it is bright enough and contrasting enough for its price. Resolution - 1 440 × 720 pixels (HD). This does not cause discomfort and does not interfere with the pleasure of watching videos and playing games, however, having paid only a thousand rubles, you can already count on Full HD from other brands. The question is, do you need a Full HD screen? In addition, let's not forget that the higher the resolution, the more resources are required to display the image.

Performance

The hardware base of the OPPO A83 is the eight-core MediaTek MT6763T chipset, aka Helio P23. Exactly the same processor as in the more expensive OPPO F5. The amount of RAM - 3 GB, built-in - 32 GB.

The smartphone clearly fits into its price range: there are no serious devices with a Full-Screen-screen and a more powerful filling for this money. There is enough power for anything you want. As for games, you can play anything: World of Tanks Blitz, World of Warships Blitz, Modern Strike Online, War Robots, games of the Warhammer 40,000 series - during the testing of the OPPO A83 budget employee, I did not deny myself anything. At the same time, games fly at high graphic settings. In the AnTuTu 6 test, the smartphone scored as much as 68 thousand points, beating many more expensive middle peasants with results of 50-60 thousand.

Camera

The main camera looks normal. The resolution is 13 megapixels, the aperture is f / 2, 2. There is nothing special in these numbers. Which sensor is installed in the smartphone - OPPO is silent. The camera correctly exposes, copes well with high-contrast scenes, shoots surprisingly well indoors and at night: the pictures are bright, not too noisy, the noise reduction algorithms work very accurately.

But there is a nuance: the speed of the camera. It happened that more than 1 second passed between pressing the shutter button and shooting! What it depends on and what happens “under the hood” of a smartphone at these moments is unclear. Does not shine with speed and autofocus. This behavior is likely to be fixed in upcoming firmwares.

The conclusion is this: the OPPO A83 camera pleases when you need to take a picture in a calm environment. If you are in a hurry, want to photograph something on the go or shoot a dynamic scene, then there will be no guarantees.

Note that there are smartphones with dual cameras in the same price range, for example the new Huawei P Smart for 14,990 rubles. Should I take the second camera seriously?

The fact is that in inexpensive smartphones the second camera is used for shooting in wide aperture mode. This is useful when you want to take a portrait while blurring out the background nicely. The second camera has no other role for this money. Therefore, if you do not plan to shoot 100 portraits with bokeh a day, then the second camera will not give you any advantage.

But the front camera is no longer so simple. There are as many as 8 megapixels, f / 2, 2 aperture and, most importantly, the proprietary SelfieTune selfie enhancement technology. I talked about it in detail in the OPPO F5 review. In a nutshell: SelfieTune processes self-portraits so that you look younger and fresher, and an attractive sparkle appears in the eyes. While OPPO doesn’t call the A83 a selfie expert, it could well be at its price point.

Connection

What can you want from a smartphone for 13,990 rubles at the start of sales? Two SIM cards, LTE, GPS satellite receiver, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth - it's all there.

Moreover, two SIM cards can be installed along with a microSD card. I would also like to see NFC, especially since the competitor Huawei P Smart has it, albeit chopped off - without the support of Mifare, which means that smartphone owners will not be able to replenish the Troika card.

Software

OPPO is installing ColorOS 3.2 on its smartphones. This is the simplest interface I've seen on Android. The desktop, the shortcut to the settings - that's it, there is nothing else here. Some people don't like it, but I, on the contrary, like it.

There are also software chips. The most interesting, in my opinion:

  • Face recognition. You can protect access to your smartphone using this function. The gadget recognizes the owner quickly and accurately. It was not possible to deceive him with a photograph.
  • Split screen mode. Allows you to open two applications on one screen at once to do two things at the same time, for example, watch videos and chat. However, not all applications support this feature.

Out of the box, OPPO A83 comes with Android 7.1 Nougat operating system.

Working hours

OPPO A83 received a battery with a capacity of 3,180 mAh, which is average. The battery life is also common: a day in mixed use and a day and a half if you save money. Charging is done via the microUSB port.

OPPO A83 Review
OPPO A83 Review

OPPO A83 is a typical inexpensive midrange, in which everything is as it should be. Up-to-date design, powerful hardware and, in general, a good camera. There are not so many competitors with the same solid screen in this price segment.

Slightly more expensive, for 15 thousand, you can buy Huawei P Smart with FullHD-display, dual camera and NFC, as well as Honor 9 lite. But, as I said, the benefits of such a display, a second camera and a chopped-off NFC are questionable.

It would seem that ASUS ZenFone Max Plus M1 looks more advantageous: there is a long-lasting battery, and a full-fledged second camera with wide-angle optics, and NFC, and Full HD, but the processor is frail - MediaTek MT6750T. Don't play.

In a modest range of inexpensive full-screen middlings, OPPO A83 looks surprisingly expressive and bright and definitely deserves the attention of those buyers who are not ready to spend more than 15 thousand rubles on a smartphone.
