Everything you need to know about watering, pruning, replanting and wintering a beautiful plant.
Where to put gloxinia
Place the flower in bright, diffused sunlight. The best option is a window sill on the east or west side.
In the northern part of the room, the plant is dark and needs to be supplemented with, for example, fluorescent lamps. Leaving a flower on the southern windowsills without shading should also not be. It is better to place the gloxinia near the window and make sure that direct sunlight does not fall on it.
Immediately choose a place for the plant where there are no drafts.
From spring to autumn, gloxinia is comfortable at normal room temperature. And during winter dormancy, the flower must be kept at a thermometer reading of 7-10 ° C.
How to water gloxinia
Use filtered or settled water with a temperature a couple of degrees above room temperature for irrigation. Add to a tray or top of a pot. Keep moisture away from leaves and flowers.
From spring to the second half of August, water the gloxinia every two to three days or less so that the topsoil in the pot has time to dry out. Remove excess water from the pallet. Do not allow the land to dry out completely or waterlogging.
From late summer on, gradually increase the watering intervals by a day or two. And when the leaves are completely dry, stop moisturizing the gloxinia.
Start watering the tuber when you plant it back in the ground. Moisturize sparingly at first, pour in very little water. And gradually switch to the usual mode for the warm season.
From spring to autumn, high humidity is useful for gloxinia. But you shouldn't spray the flower. It is better to surround it with containers of water or spray moisture from a spray bottle a little to the side of the plant every couple of days.
How to fertilize gloxinia
Feed gloxinia every 10-14 days about a month after awakening and starting to grow and until mid-August.
Use complex fertilizers designed for flowering plants. Follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage. An excess of nutrients is bad for gloxinia.
During preparation for dormancy and wintering, fertilization is not necessary.
If not fed at all, the flowers will be small and sparse.
How to care for gloxinia after flowering
After the first flowering, it is still too early for the plant to prepare for dormancy. Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut the trunk to the first pair of leaves or completely.
This stimulates re-flowering, after which the gloxinia will begin to prepare for rest.
How to prepare gloxinia for wintering
Gloxinia has a dormant period from the second half of October or November to early March. During preparation for it, the leaves turn yellow and dry out.
Once the leaves are dead, the plant is ready for winter. Remove the tuber from the pot and shake it off the ground, remove the dried roots and leaves. Then put in a regular plastic or zip bag. Cover with peat or vermiculite and cover.
Store until spring in the fruit compartment of the refrigerator or other cool dark place at a temperature of 7 to 10 ° C. Check the tuber once or twice a month. If copious condensation appears inside the package, dry the contents.
When it's time to wake up the plant, just take out the bag of gloxinia and place it in a bright place at room temperature.
Winter dormancy is not needed only for first-year plants, which have not yet managed to form a sufficiently large tuber from 2 centimeters. After hibernation, such gloxinias may not wake up at all.
To ensure normal wintering conditions without rest, leave the flower in its original place. Provide the gloxinia with at least 12-14 hours of daylight hours with fluorescent or special lamps for plants. Then she will grow the tuber and be ready for the next season.
How to transplant gloxinia
In late February or early March, the plant comes out of dormancy. This is the optimal time to transplant gloxinia into a new pot. Choose a container about a centimeter wider than the previous one.
In this case, the diameter of the pot should be 5–6 centimeters larger than the tuber. In a container that is too spacious, it is easy to flood the plant, which may cause it to die.
Apply violet primer. You can buy it at a specialty store. Add baking powder, perlite or vermiculite - about a quarter of the total.
Be sure to lay at least 1½ – 2 centimeters of expanded clay drainage on the bottom.
Shake off vermiculite or peat before planting. Examine carefully. If there are any rotten areas, cut them out with a knife and treat those areas with crushed coal.
Place drainage and soil in the pot. Make a small depression and place the tuber with the concave side up. Sprinkle about two-thirds of soil with soil to keep the top open. Water gently without touching the plant.
When the leaves appear, add a little soil so that it completely covers the tuber.

How to properly care for gloxinia
- Place the plant in a well-lit place, but not in direct sunlight.
- Protect gloxinia from drafts and sudden changes in temperature.
- Water regularly. Do not let the soil in the pot dry out completely or turn into a swamp.
- Maintain high humidity. For example, place small containers of water next to the gloxinia.
- Fertilize the plant from spring to late summer.
- Prune after the first bloom to achieve a second bloom.
- Create suitable winter conditions for the plant in a cool, dark place.

How to choose the right flowers
Each time choosing flowers takes a huge amount of time for me, because I don't really want to buy a bouquet, which in an hour will turn into a broom. And not because I took them for a long time, but because the flowers were not very fresh. When choosing roses, I look at the leaves, at the cut of the stem and at how tightly the sepals (the green part of the flower) adhere to the buds.
