Begonia, petunia, morning glory, sweet peas and other vibrant plants that can be admired until the fall frost.
Things to remember
- You will have to plant seedlings. In spring, you can only buy it in shops or markets, because seeds and tubers are planted from late February to April.
- When choosing colors, consider which side your balcony faces. Some plants need a lot of sunlight for abundant flowering, while others will quickly wither under the scorching midday rays.
- Ampel flowers with hanging shoots look better in hanging pots. For the rest, ordinary pots or balcony boxes will do.

- Before taking out to the balcony, transplant the seedlings into the selected containers. Use a universal primer. Be sure to put a layer of drainage on the bottom, such as expanded clay or gravel.
- Place flowers on the balcony when the weather is warm and the threat of frost has passed. This is especially true for open loggias, where the outside temperature is.
- Gradually accustom your plants to fresh air. Take it out on the balcony during the day for a week or a half, and then return it back.
- When watering, consider not only the recommended frequency, but also the weather conditions. In a rainy summer, flowers in an open place do not always need additional moisture.
- Ventilate the closed balcony daily so that the plants constantly have enough fresh air.
- In the summer, feed the flowers with complex fertilizers about once a month. Select the dosage and frequency for each type individually.
1. Balsam
- Where to put: on the balcony on the north, east or west side. In the south, if there is no other option, be sure to shade.
- When it blooms: from early summer to autumn.
- How many lives: there are both annuals and perennials.
Balsam forms bushes 20–25 cm high. The flowers are rather large, red, white or pink. There are both ordinary and terry.
The main rule in caring for balsam is regular and abundant watering every day or two. Without this, the plant will quickly droop. It feels fine in partial shade, but not under the scorching rays, especially at noon.
For a comfortable winter, the flower needs a temperature of 15-16 ° C and daily spraying or constant air humidification.
2. Tuberous begonia
- Where to put: on the balcony on the north, east or west side.
- When it blooms: in late spring, summer and autumn.
- How many lives: perennial.
Tuberous begonia grows up to 60 cm in height. Flowers are large, simple or double. They are painted in different shades of red, white, pink, orange.
Tuberous begonias are watered regularly, once every couple of days, so that the ground does not dry out.
To preserve the plant for the next year, at the end of autumn, the tubers are dug out of the ground, the leaves and stems are cut off. Then it is dried and stored in a dry and dark room at a temperature of 5–8 ° C.
3. Viola
- Where to put: on a balcony that faces east or west.
- When it blooms: in late spring, summer and autumn.

Sweet pea is a plant with medium-sized red, white, pink, purple fragrant flowers. Curly varieties look spectacular, some grow up to several meters. For them, it is worth pulling the threads or installing special supports. Low-growing varieties up to 45 cm in height do not need support.
Sweet peas are watered sparingly, about once every two to three days. The soil should remain slightly moist and not dry out completely.
5. Morning glory
- Where to put: on a balcony that faces south, east or west.

Water the plant every two to three days, more often in the heat.

- When it blooms: in summer and autumn.
- How many lives: perennial.
This is a climbing plant with large bright flowers - white, pink, blue, blue, purple. To make it manifest itself in all its glory, install next to it supports, trellis or pull the mesh. For a balcony, it is better to choose varieties with a stem length of up to 3-4 m.
Clematis should be watered regularly, every two to three days. The ground should not dry out, otherwise the plant may die. But it is not worth arranging a swamp either - because of this, root diseases develop.
With the onset of the autumn cold, clematis must be cut off and prepared for wintering. On a glazed balcony, where the temperature does not drop below 0 ° C, the plant is covered with peat or sawdust and wrapped in non-woven covering material. The latter is sold in specialized stores. On an open balcony, do not leave even well-insulated clematis to winter. The plant will die if the ground freezes.

How to choose the right flowers
Each time choosing flowers takes a huge amount of time for me, because I don't really want to buy a bouquet, which in an hour will turn into a broom. And not because I took them for a long time, but because the flowers were not very fresh. When choosing roses, I look at the leaves, at the cut of the stem and at how tightly the sepals (the green part of the flower) adhere to the buds.
