Google's mapping services have received one of the most ambitious updates in their history - new satellite imagery of planet Earth.

Three years ago, Google engineers found a way to combine satellite images of the Earth's surface, removing clouds and other atmospheric phenomena from them. This find was used to process photographs taken by the Landsat 7 satellite back in 2003. The quality of the images in itself was far from ideal, so it is fair to say that Google did everything possible to provide the best image to users of map services.

As time went on, Google decided to repeat the old trick, using much better photos from the Landsat 8 satellite, owned by NASA and the US Geological Survey. New satellite images were taken relatively recently, in 2013. Accordingly, modern technologies have made it possible to obtain much more detailed and high-quality photos in a much higher resolution.

The new imagery for Google Map Services was captured using one petabyte of data (1,024 terabytes). This is more than 700 trillion pixels, which, in turn, is 7,000 times more than the stars in the Milky Way.

The pretty numbers cited by Google illustrate equally impressive work and its results. Google Maps and Google Earth now look much better and sharper than before. On the surface of our planet, you can see the smallest details.
