In the updated line of Apple Watch Series 2, the Edition modification in a ceramic case stands apart. Here's what you need to know about her.
It's hard to judge the success of the 18k gold Apple Watch Edition, but Apple opted to ditch it in the new generation, which was unveiled on Wednesday. They were replaced by the much more affordable, but no less impressive, Apple Watch Edition in a ceramic case. It should be admitted that this particular model is able to offer customers something special.
So, ceramics is a much more durable material than metal. To understand this better, it is enough to imagine a modern MacBook in an anodized aluminum case. It looks solid and reliable, but most falls end up in damage to the case. Careless carrying of the laptop along with another metal object is guaranteed to cause scratches.
This is why many watch lovers love ceramics. Both Rado and Rolex have been using ceramics since the 1960s. Even Apple has already used zirconium ceramics in the first generation of Apple Watch, in the place where the magnetic charging is connected. The material is non-conductive and does not interfere with wireless charging.
Ceramic watches are popular, and this phenomenon is very easy to explain. Consider how, after the Apple Watch went on sale last year, the company received complaints about the easily scratched steel version of the watch. The problem is typical not only for Apple smartwatches, but also for any watch in a steel case: they are easily scratched.
Ceramics, in turn, are almost completely scratch resistant. The material cannot be deformed until it cracks. Ceramics, unlike aluminum and steel, can break. This is typical for hard and rigid materials. The ceramic is filled with unevenly distributed pores, these air pockets allow it to be lighter, but at the same time create weak points in its structure.
The fact that watchmakers usually use zirconium ceramics, in which the pores are so small that the case simultaneously retains the basic properties of the material, and at the same time is resistant to impacts, should add peace to the buyers. Apple also used aluminum oxide, another well-known type of ceramic. The result is a scratch-resistant material that in most cases cannot be broken. No, it is possible, but hardly anyone will encounter this problem while using the device.
