UnifyID is a promising new technology that should replace traditional passwords with user identification based on its unique characteristics.
Passwords consisting of a set of characters are no longer a guarantee of security. Many manufacturers seek to supplement the standard username / password pair with additional security systems, such as two-factor authentication, when you also receive a message with a one-time code. All of these security technologies are good to a certain extent because they represent only a temporary barrier to hackers.
The modern approach to security is based on passwords, which you still have to enter, revealing them to a computer or mobile device in order to gain the desired access. However, UnifyID thinks they can change the established state of affairs. Their technology of the same name uses hidden user authentication.
Instead of entering a password, UnifyID assumes recognition of the person who wants to gain access. Recognition consists of many stages that use a wide variety of data about a user to identify him, including the set of devices, the places visited, the sensors you have to interact with during the day, and even the gait and typing style. This creates a unique user profile.
UnifyID is being used as a Chrome browser extension and iOS app for the first time. An Android version will also be available in the near future. This link works as follows: you go to the site and automatically enter your account using the UnifyID, because the system already knows that it is you. In case of the slightest doubt or at the initial stages when little information has been collected about the user, it will be suggested to use Touch ID.
The privacy issue naturally arises, because UnifyID collects too much data about each user. The company assures that most of the data is stored on the device, only a small part of it goes to a remote server. In addition, all information is encrypted.
Currently, the development of UnifyID is free as a demonstration of the technology of the same name. However, in the future, there are plans to sell to other companies the ability to embed UnifyID into their products. At the same time, the developer's representatives are confident that the big four represented by Microsoft, Google, Apple and Facebook will definitely try to present their own developments in this area, but UnifyID will have one serious advantage over them - a single unified technology.
