What's inside the new Apple TV

The most famous blog on Apple technology repair iFixit is another novelty, found out what lies at the heart of the fourth generation Apple TV set-top box, and assessed its maintainability.

The changes in the new product are noticeable even externally: it has become taller and one and a half times heavier, got rid of the audio jack, and the micro-USB diagnostic port received the Type C standard. Inside, the new product has all the best from its predecessor, while the technical equipment has been significantly improved.

The fourth generation Apple TV is still assembled on a block basis. This greatly simplifies the design and improves maintainability. Responsible for performance is the 64-bit Apple A8 processor and as much as 2 GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Next to them on the board, the wizards found a Wi-Fi module, a memory controller similar to that built into a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and 32 GB of NAND flash memory.

The remaining space is taken up by a fairly large heat sink and power board. Since heat always rises upward, the blocks generating it are located in the upper part of the structure, under which the temperature-sensitive board is located. The voltage of the power supply has noticeably increased: if earlier it was 3.4 V for 1.75 A, then in the current generation it is 12 V at 0.917 A.

IFixit noted the lack of wires between the power supply and the motherboard.

The components are powered either magically or through the screw connections of the heatsink.

Following the Apple TV came the turn of the Siri Remote. It has undergone major changes, received a glass touch panel, two microphones, a Lightning connector, Bluetooth 4.0, an accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope.

The design of the top panel mount is reminiscent of the iPhone 5s - here it is also connected to the bottom by a wide flat connector in the middle. The small board houses an ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller, a touchpad controller (like the iPhone 5s / 5c and iPad Air), a gyroscope, a signal processor, and a Bluetooth transmitter.

Then the most interesting thing: the Lightning connector here is made in ZIF format and connected to a 410 mAh battery. IFixit was left wondering why Apple found a place for the ZIF connector in a small remote and didn't fit it into a much larger iPad.

In general, the engineers rated the maintainability of the Apple TV 4 at 8/10, noting only the need for re-soldering at the motherboard level in case of problems with the ports.
