Performance improvement

iOS 12 can be safely installed on any device - even the oldest. Unlike previous versions, the new OS not only does not slow down, but also speeds up their work. Thanks to optimizations, Apple has managed to achieve impressive performance and smooth animations. With intensive use, apps open twice as fast, the camera launches 70% faster, and the keyboard 50%.

New gestures

In the new iOS, Apple continued to actively introduce gestures that appeared after the abandonment of the Home button on the iPhone X. Now, to close the application in the polysemy menu, you do not need to hold your finger on the card - just swipe it up.

Similar gestures have appeared on the iPad, where, given the size of the screen, they are even more appropriate. Applications on the tablet are switched by swipes at the bottom of the display, and closed by swiping up. The "Control Center" is now in a separate menu and is called up by swiping from the upper right corner, as in the iPhone X.

Screen time

The new iOS feature will allow you to analyze how and how much you use your gadget. The system collects statistics by tracking the amount of time you spend in applications, records how many times a device is unlocked per hour, and then provides detailed weekly reports.

Screen Time will help you get rid of gadget addiction, allowing you to control and limit the time spent in certain applications: when the set limits are reached, a corresponding notification will be displayed. The heads of family accounts will be able to view statistics on the devices of all family members and flexibly customize them.

Extended battery statistics

Battery usage data is now displayed in more detail. Expanded statistics show a detailed discharge graph, as well as activity by time and the ratio of consumed charge between applications.

In addition, the system offers tips for improving energy efficiency and extending battery life. For example, it is advised to reduce the brightness of the backlight or the time for automatic screen locking.

Grouping notifications

The updated "Notification Center" has become much cleaner and more minimalistic. Notifications are displayed not in a continuous stream, but in neat piles, in which they are grouped by applications or separate branches - for example, different chats in instant messengers.

Notifications can be managed right from the lock screen. Full mute, mute, and group clear and of course quick preview are available.

Memoji and new Animoji

Even Animoji has been improved in iOS 12 - now they can wink and show language. In addition to the existing ones, four new Animoji have appeared: koala, tiger, ghost and dinosaur.

Users of the iPhone X and the new iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR will be able to create personalized Animoji - animated emoji avatars that look like the wearer. They can be used when communicating in iMessage and FaceTime.

ARKit 2

In the new iOS, developers have even more tools for creating augmented reality applications, including multiuser ones. They will allow you to create games in which several players can interact in a single virtual environment.

As an example of such a program, Apple added the standard Roulette application, which allows you to measure real objects with high accuracy by simply pointing the camera at them.

Siri Quick Actions and Shortcuts

With every version of iOS, Apple's virtual assistant gets smarter. This year, Siri has learned to analyze the daily actions that users perform on the iPhone, and offers to simplify them by adding quick commands.

As you use it, the proposed scenarios will appear in the settings, which are activated by voice commands. Also coming soon is the Shortcuts application, with which actions can be combined with each other, creating entire macros for automation.

New Do Not Disturb Mode

Advanced settings appeared in the already familiar Do Not Disturb mode. In iOS 12, it can be activated not only on a schedule and manually, but also by geolocation: no one will bother you until you leave your current location. From the "Control Center" the mode is turned on for an hour, until tomorrow morning or until you leave the geolocation.

Group FaceTime calls up to 32 people

FaceTime can now be used for large conferences, hosting meetings with up to 32 people. Thanks to the function of automatically enlarging the picture of the speaker, the conversation thread will not be lost even with so many people. You can start and join conversations either through the FaceTime app itself or through iMessage.

Security updates

Apple continues to make its mobile OS safer and more convenient at the same time. iOS 12 has learned to recognize and automatically insert one-time passwords from SMS when logging into the Internet bank and other accounts.

Added support for autocomplete from third-party password managers, which was previously only available for iCloud Keychain. Now this feature works, for example, for 1Password, and not only in Safari, but also in applications.

Redesigned Photos app

IOS 12 has improved support for RAW photos: you can import photos from professional cameras, and on iPad Pro you can even edit them in the standard Photos application.

Thanks to smart algorithms, it has learned to recognize people, objects and places, allowing you to use them as filters when searching. Also there was a tab "For you", where iOS makes various photo collections by events.

Improved navigation in CarPlay
