Who is Captain Marvel and what will be shown in the new film?

In March 2019, for International Women's Day, the next film from Marvel Studios, Captain Marvel, will be released, starring Brie Larson. The action will take place in the past - that is, before Thanos made the epoch-making flick of his fingers in the Infinity Gauntlet. And since we are talking about the 90s, the authors promise a perky action in the style of classic action movies. At the end of April 2019, the heroine will appear in the sequel to Infinity War, and a solo film will set the stage for this.

For the first time, Carol Danvers - that is the real name of the heroine - appeared in comics published by Marvel Comics in 1968. This is an earthly woman serving in the US Air Force and a special agent. In intelligence, she worked with Nick Fury. By the way, in one of the comics, Carol even ended up in prison at the Lubyanka.

In a way, the character was a response to DC's Wonder Woman - in the late 60s, strong heroines were as much in demand as they are today. Now history repeats itself: as soon as DC released a film about Wonder Woman, Marvel also took care of filming its own solo album.

Why there are several Captains Marvel

Filming footage suggests that Danvers will be shown as an Air Force pilot, as well as while serving in the Starforce Squad, a Kree military group that will fight another alien race, the Skrulls. The script is based on the events of the "Avengers" comics of the early 70s, telling about the confrontation between these civilizations.

Skrulls, who in their original form look like green-skinned sharp-eared goblins, are able to change their appearance. The main villain of the film is the Skrull Talos. On Earth, he will pretend to be human in order to infiltrate SHIELD, and for space battles, obviously, take on his own form. Both the Skrulls and the Kree keep their spies on our planet, which is an important strategic target for them. And now it will become the place of their collision.

So what is Captain Marvel doing with the Kree? In the comics, Carol Danvers did not know about her abilities for quite some time, since she did not remember anything about what happened when her superhero alter ego was activated. In the trailer, she, too, appears to have lost her memory when she falls to Earth from space. So it looks like Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel are two different personalities. Like Bruce Banner and the Hulk.

The time rollback is a great way to enrich the story with new details and details about the characters' past. After all, the main action of the MCU begins only at the end of the 2000s, when the events of the first "Iron Man" take place.

The first Captain Marvel is also expected to appear in the film. Jude Law, who is involved in the filming of the film, presumably plays just Mar-Vella. Although this is not certain: the actor himself answers questions in interviews evasively, without giving out the name of his character. Therefore, most likely, his story will be significantly different from what is told in the comics.

What fan theories exist

There is a version that Captain Marvel never learned how to cope with their huge forces. It is so powerful that it is even dangerous. Thus, in the finale of Infinity War, Nick Fury not only calls her for help, but frees her from some kind of “special storage” outside the Earth, where she is after the events of the 90s. This means that Captain Marvel will be able to play a key role in the war against Thanos.

In particular, a fan poster recently appeared on the network in which Captain Marvel kills Thanos. Of course, this is not a studio spoiler, but just fan art. Nevertheless, the artist probably has reason to think in this direction.

What fans criticize the film for and what they hope for

In the comics, Captain Marvel has a classic chiseled figure for superheroines, but does not appear in armored bras (at least in later comics). She is primarily a soldier, her element is battle. In addition, she is smart and sharp-tongued. So among the readers of comics, the heroine has her fans. In addition, Carol is not perfect and has her dark sides. For example, in one subplot of the comics, she begins to abuse alcohol.

But to many who are not familiar with comics, the announced image of the heroine of the MCU seemed sudden and even annoying. Captain Marvel is positioned as a strong character who will play an important role in future events. According to the head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige, her appearance will radically change the balance of power in the MCU - she is so powerful.

At the same time, viewers of movie comics do not yet know anything about her. In this sense, she loses to understandable and familiar heroes like Iron Man, Thor, Hulk or Spider-Man, who have long been presented and revealed in the movies. So Danvers can get the fame of Mary Sue - an overly gifted heroine, which the scriptwriters play along.
