But researchers say those who consume huge doses of the drink are more likely to be smokers (simple statistics, nothing personal). Therefore, it is rather difficult to study the effect of coffee on such participants in the experiment: it is necessary to take into account many factors at once. And so far there have been no organizations willing to invest large sums of money in such a complex and complex research.
Therefore, Frank Hu and his colleagues decided to exclude smokers from the main study, after which they found that coffee prolongs the life of those who lead a healthy lifestyle. As for people with addictions who drink five or more cups of the drink a day, they also had a positive effect. Smokers reduced the risk of early death by 12%, non-smokers - by 15%.
What's more, coffee has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, and suicidal tendencies. However, no link has been found between coffee and cancer.
There have been dozens of studies previously conducted on the relationship between coffee and health, the results of which are quite controversial. But not all of the scientists' conclusions were like that, says Christina Bamia, professor of epidemiology and medical statistics at the University of Athens. In her opinion, the connection between drinking coffee and the state of the human body becomes obvious if you investigate it in relation to each disease separately.
