Coffee on vacation: how to take delicious coffee with you to any part of the world

My name is Sergey Dorokhov, I know everything about coffee, and this is a problem. My wife and I are tasters, and the coffee that many people drink for money and are still praised does not suit us. At first, we spat on tasteless espresso and cappuccino, and then we began to think about how to take our own coffee on the trip. Were in Europe, Asia and Africa. Were in villages and megacities, in the mountains and on the coast. We spent the night in tents and in five-star hotels. We have tried everything that only exists in the coffee world, and now we are sharing our many years of experience.

I'll tell you how to make coffee on vacation with a family in different ways. Choose the one that feels more comfortable. All are good, tested on myself. I'll start with the simplest and most unpretentious ones, and then we'll climb together to the delicious top of the coffee hit parade.

7) Find a coffee shop nearby

We use facebook, twitter, google maps in advance. Foursquare is especially good! Calculating good coffee is sometimes easy, sometimes impossible. But on the whole, it is clear that in Egypt or Turkey there is basically no tasty coffee, and going to London with your samovar is idiocy. Here, for example, is the most hipster solution: the London’s Best Coffee app, which detects the location and suggests the nearest coffee shops with ratings and reviews.

Dignity: no extra baggage.

disadvantages: expensive and not the fact that it is tasty.

6) Open brewing in a cup

“Steaming and not steaming” - ground coffee is brewed in a cup with hot water. This is what professional tasters do:

Dignity: just take with you or buy on-site coffee

disadvantages: many people don't like thick, delicious only with very good coffee

5) French press

This is my Vitesse bulletproof thermostatic jacket. A cool jacket is made by Starbucks, it does not have a handle and has a sealed lid. You can buy it on Ibei.

Sometimes it is more convenient to buy a glass one on the spot than to lug an iron one with you, and then throw it away or give it to someone. Here is a video on how to brew a French jacket correctly.

Dignity: cheap, simple, convenient.

disadvantages: not everyone likes the taste of French coffee.

4) Espresso coffee machine

We bought Gaggia Espresso Pure Nero especially for the holiday. There were two selection criteria: a) cheap, not a pity; 2) the lightest of the normal. We spent two summers with her on the Black Sea and in the Carpathians.

We took ground coffee with us in sealed cans - silicone gaskets did not allow it to quickly disappear. A little pill coffee in reserve.

Within the country, the issue of replenishing coffee stocks was resolved by mail.

Dignity: Uncompromising espresso and cappuccino, suitable for any coffee.

disadvantages: expensive, heavy, bulky, you need to know how to cook.

3) Aeropress

Aeropress looks like a small toy, but it makes delicious coffee. Up to 200 ml can be brewed in one brew, the saturation of the drink is regulated by the amount of ground coffee, temperature and amount of water, extraction time and pressing force. Everything is very individual!

You can make a light coffee with the consistency of diluted compote from dried fruits, or you can make a thermonuclear caffeine concentrate. Here is a video on how to brew Aeropress correctly:

You can buy Aeropress at the Coffee Market. The set includes a convenient lightweight case such as a cosmetic bag:

Dignity: ample opportunities to intuitively change the saturation of the coffee, suitable for any coffee

disadvantages: you need to be able to cook, apply effort during extraction, inconvenient to wash

2) Handpresso

We take hot water from a kettle, a cooler, a pot over a fire or take a thermos of boiling water with us. The pressure is pumped by a built-in bicycle type pump. From experience, pill coffee is very convenient! No need to wash, you can wipe it with a napkin. Handpresso - the name says it all. This is a real espresso coffee maker that you can hold in your hand, there are models for ground and pill coffee, covers and cases, ready-made sets with cups and a thermos. It is used in the mountains:

and even in a submarine:

There is a car modification, it works from a cigarette lighter:

I took it on camping trips, took hot water from the fire, the tourists were shocked that in the morning there was an espresso for the whole camp! Here's my outdoor set:

Dignity: real espresso, compact.

disadvantages: you have to pump the pump.

1) Purover Hario V60

As a result, our choice is definitely a pourover! The most fashionable, the most trendy, the most progressive cooking method. Still looking for a recipe for a coffee with spices and cream from a spray can? Oh well. Stop masking the blatantly crappy taste of low-quality coffee with sugar, milk, cream and syrups! Stop paying for the slop they sell you at every turn, from stalls to network giants with a green mermaid on their mugs! Good coffee tastes good by itself; it is a sin to spoil it with any additives. Come over to the bright side, young Padawan!

It is easy to learn how to make hand-made filter coffee. No problems with grind selection, no complicated equipment or expensive devices. Easy to wash (or not at all). We take a large model for 1-4 coffee and prepare half a liter at once, so economically in terms of filter consumption and time. This drink tastes good hot, warm and even chilled. The Hario V60 dripper funnel turned out to be the most convenient of all the pourovers. We like red ceramic, but you can buy a plastic one for 1-2 cups and it will be quite minimal in terms of money, weight and volume. I talked with the Japanese from Hario, gave them the idea of making funnels out of silicone so that they could be crumpled and shoved into their pockets. They promise to start production soon!

P. S. Coffee uber ales

In fact, it doesn't matter which model of frying pan to fry rotten meat - a fresh steak still won't work. It's the same with coffee! Therefore, it seems to me that an even more important topic is not how to prepare, but how to keep the coffee fresh. The uncompromising option is to bring your grinder with you. I did so, this is how I packed my suitcase to the warm edges:

If the trip is only for a few days, then you can take ground coffee with you. The packaging must be airtight (sealed with a soldering iron, glued with tape). If it is longer than two months, then poured coffee will save (packed in an inert gas environment, keeps the suitability for 12 months) or freshly roasted coffee delivery from an online store. I would buy from Mr. Leighton, if I didn't have my own (Yes, we roast mega-delicious coffee. No, we don't sell it yet, not enough, not enough for everyone.).

General recommendations: Freshly roasted plantation coffee is good for any preparation method. Espresso blends with robusta - only in espresso machine. Espresso blends of 100% Arabica are versatile to the point that you can prepare handpresso, aeropress and even french. It is better to use light varieties in alternative methods (light, Scandinavian roast). For a pourover, open brewing (steamed in a cup) - only freshly roasted, only light, only freshly ground grains!

P. P. S. Pitcher: Anytime, Anywhere

As you can see in the pictures above, I always take a pitcher with me (jug, metal milk jug). It is needed not only for latte art, the pitcher is an extremely convenient, reliable, lightweight, versatile vessel. I have one. From it I pour a thin stream of water into the pourover, since it is inconvenient to drag an ideologically correct kettle with a long spout across the continents: it is large, heavy. I am finishing my article, sitting on my suitcases.

Let the bulky coffee machine please grandmother at home! We only take with us:

1. Purover Hario V60

2. Filters Hario V60

3. Pitcher 340 ml

4. Ground coffee

Fresh photos from vacation coming soon. How do you drink coffee while traveling?
