If you're on Windows 10, whether you like it or not, by default, PDF documents are opened by the Microsoft Edge browser.

Compared to Explorer, it has undoubtedly improved: it received a redesigned interface, high speed of work and new functions. But as a PDF reader, Edge only offers basic functionality, it doesn't support editing. If you want to use a more advanced program, you will have to change the default settings.

Method number 1. Through Windows settings

From the Start menu, open Settings → System.

Options → System
Options → System

Select "Default Applications" and scroll down to "Select default applications for file types."

Open "Select Standard Applications for File Types"
Open "Select Standard Applications for File Types"

Find "PDF File" in the left column, click on Microsoft Edge next to it and select the reader you want to use from the menu that appears. In our case, this is Foxit Reader.

Find the.pdf, click on Microsoft Edge and select another program from the list

Method number 2. Through the context menu of the file

Right-click the PDF file and click Open With → Choose Another Application.

"Open with" → "Choose another application"
"Open with" → "Choose another application"

Click on the application you need, at the bottom of the window, check the box "Always use this application to open.pdf files" and do not forget to click OK.

"Always use this app to open.pdf files"
"Always use this app to open.pdf files"

If the desired program is not in the selection, in the same window select "More applications", scroll to "Find another application on this computer" and do the same.

All PDF documents now have their icons changed to reflect the new default program. You no longer have to be annoyed that the file is opened in the browser, or choose your favorite editor in the context menu every time.
