1. Cloud rap

Many believe that rap is songs exclusively about a successful career in the criminal world and an extremely diverse sex life. These themes are, of course, immortal, but everything evolves, and rap is no exception. So this genre has its own existential heroes.

American Bones and Swede Yung Lean are not the pioneers of cloud rap, but perhaps some of the most interesting representatives of the genre if you take those who managed to achieve impressive popularity.

2. Trap

Even if you don’t listen to music at all, you’ve definitely met this genre somewhere in the mall or something like that.

"Dry" drum machines from the 80s, evil rhythm, drug dealers in gold chains with the word SWAG … Over the past few years, all this has become so annoying that in 2017 trap can only be perceived in a humorous context.

3. Lo-Fi

Strictly speaking, Lo-Fi is not a genre, but a designation of sound that mows under a worn-out audio cassette. Well, or a cheap tape recorder. In general, for everything that has a low playback quality. What for? The answer is simple: people like it.

There are both guitar Lo-Fi music and Lo-Fi electronics. For example, in 2016, Lo-Fi House quickly broke out of the underground, immediately conquering lounge spaces around the world: nevertheless, such music does not always roll on the dance floor.

4. Future Bass

The Future Bass genre has existed since the 2000s, but has gained particular popularity in the last couple of years. This music is distinguished by the beats broken through the DJ's knee and that very "futuristic" sound (sorry for the tautology).

One of the pioneers of the genre in Russia, and indeed one of the most famous Russian electronics engineers, is Pixelord. If it seems to you that this is not the kind of future your generation was building, do not be upset: in a year or two, the fashion for this genre will pass.

5. Chillwave

Aesthetics of the 80s and 90s, mineral water without gas, clips filmed with a cassette camera - all this is about Chillwave's music. The essence lies in the name of the genre itself - these are ideal sounds in order not to think about anything.

Although the genre's popularity peaked a few years ago, Chillwave never thought to die. It has become more electronic, and now you can listen to it 24/7:

6. Vaporwave

In May 2017, the musician with a difficult to pronounce pseudonym Oneohtrix Point Never received the Cannes Film Festival award for best soundtrack. The musician's real name is Daniel Lopatin. He is the son of Russian émigrés living in New York and one of the world's most sought-after DJs playing experimental music.

The award was given for the soundtrack to the film "Good Time" recorded with Iggy Pop.

Daniel Lopatin is one of the pioneers of the Vaporwave genre, which is similar in aesthetics to Chillwave, but more experimental. Vaporwave music is a bit of a sad audio collage of samples cut from hits, commercials, and movies from the 80s and 90s.

7. New Russian wave

"Why is there only electronics, and where is the live music?" you ask reasonably.

Several years ago, new and interesting rock music suddenly appeared in Russia, and in a huge amount. The "Bol" festival became the flagship of the movement - if you want to know which rock musicians are popular now, just look who is performing there this year.

And these are just the most interesting groups and performers of the new Russian wave, from the point of view of the author:
