At one time, the amount of RAM in a computer was what we measured with our friends. But sometimes the rule "The more RAM, the more productive" is no longer valid. Our colleagues from the TechSpot portal figured out whether you need to spend money on 16 GB or even less is enough.

As a real user of Apple technology, I do not know anything about overclocking the processor (I ran benchmarks only a few times) and I consider it not the amount of RAM as an indicator of efficiency, but my sensations from working at the computer. It would be strange if I started talking about how much RAM is needed for comfortable work or games. For example, my MacBook has 4GB of RAM, and I was wondering if 16GB is worth it on cool computers?

My interest would have remained theoretical if I had not found a study of the TechSpot portal. TechSpot editor Steven Walton ran a series of tests comparing the performance of a computer in three variations: four, eight, and 16 gigabytes of RAM.

Here are the computer parameters:

  1. Processor - Intel Core i7-6700K (4 GHz).
  2. Motherboard - Asrock Z170 Gaming K6 +.
  3. Video card - GeForce GTX 980.
  4. SSD - Crucial MX200 1 TB.
  5. OS - Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.
  6. RAM - DDR4-2666 for 4, 8 and 16 GB.

The 16 GB RAM variation has proven itself in only two situations. The first is video rendering in Adobe Premier. With a 17-minute video, the computer coped with 290 seconds (16 GB), 300 seconds (8 GB) and 415 seconds (4 GB). The second test is to compare the performance of compressing files. The test is synthetic, and here the RAM came in handy. With 16 GB, the execution speed was 9,290 MIPS (million operations per second), with 8 GB - 2,902 MIPS, and with 4 GB - 446 MIPS.

In the rest of the tests, and there were about 10 of them in total, variations with 8 and 16 GB of RAM showed themselves about the same, and the four GB version was only slightly inferior.

In terms of games, GTA V, Batman: Arkham Knight and F1 2015 were played at the same FPS (frames per second) in three tests.

In summary, TechSpot has stayed true to its advice that 8GB is the optimal amount of memory for a computer. This amount of RAM should be enough even for video rendering. Even though Adobe Premier raised consumption to 12GB during the benchmark, the overall difference was not significant.
