The Expert Council at the Center for the Creative Development of the Russian Language has published a rating of the main words of 2017. They were selected from more than 200 candidate words that are suggested by users of the Word of the Year Facebook group. Here it is, the top ten most popular words of the year.

1. Renovation

The main word of the outgoing year, which became popular in April 2017 thanks to the Moscow City Hall. Over the course of 15 years, more than 5,000 old houses will be demolished in the city and new housing will be built in their place. This is called "renovation".

The program of the mayor's office for the renovation of housing affected every tenth Muscovite, therefore, caused a storm of emotions on the part of the population. In May 2017, the renovation was mentioned in the media even more often than its initiator, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

2. Bitcoin

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, a virtual currency that exists only on the Web and does not belong to any state or person. This is a cherished word that has captured the minds of millions of people around the world, including in Russia.

8. Fake

The word comes from the English fake and means forgery, deception, falsification, distortion of the truth. It gained popularity back in 2016 in connection with the presidential elections in the United States, and in 2017 it began to be used even more often.

The word "fake" is most often used to refer to fake accounts, news and social media posts.

For example, in October 2017, the Russia Today TV channel published a fake news about Putinburger: allegedly in a New York restaurant in honor of the birthday of the Russian president, a five-story burger with five cutlets weighing almost two kilograms was added to the menu.

In fact, it was not true, and the news was deleted. The space on the Internet is filled with such fakes, so the word got into the 2017 list.

9. Visa-free

A visa-free regime, or in short, a visa-free regime, is a regime of relations between countries, when citizens of these states do not need to obtain a visa to enter their territory. Visa-free travel with EU countries was introduced in June 2017 for citizens of Ukraine. The news caused a storm of emotions among Russians: many dream of a visa-free regime with the European Union, but it went not to us, but to our neighbors. The word became popular in October 2017. Then there was an investigation by The New York Times about the harassment of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein in relation to actresses.
