This puzzle has several solutions. Try to find them!
Exhausted by the heat, Petya bought a glass bottle of cool fruit drink weighing 800 grams in the store. He decided to quench his thirst right away and drank half of the drink. After that, the bottle began to weigh 480 grams. How much does an empty container weigh?
There are two ways to solve this problem. Let's consider them.
1. From the weight of a full bottle of fruit drink, subtract the weight of a half full bottle. This will help you find out the weight of half of the fruit drink: 800 - 480 = 320 grams. Let's add the weight of the two halves of the drink to understand how much fruit drink was in the bottle from the very beginning: 320 + 320 = 640 grams. We subtract the weight of the entire drink from the weight of a full bottle of fruit drink and find out the weight of an empty container: 800 - 640 = 160 grams.
2. Two half full bottles are the same as empty and full bottles combined. If we subtract the weight of a full bottle from the weight of two half-full bottles, we find out the weight of an empty container: 480 + 480 - 800 = 960 - 800 = 160 grams.
Answer: An empty bottle weighs 160 grams.
