Many men are embarrassed to wear shorts outside, even in the heat of the day. Others are not shy, but at the same time they look … well, not very much. Let's talk about shorts in a men's wardrobe, how to wear them, what to wear with and what can happen if the choice was made incorrectly. We will talk about shorts as an element of streetwear, and not sports, beach or homewear.

Why are shorts so questionable? After all, there is nothing indecent in them. They are comfortable, practical, and save you from the heat. The answer goes back to the old days when shorts were a boy's uniform. Every boy slept and saw the day when he was finally bought normal long pants and thus recognized as an adult. Many decades have passed since then, but still, somewhere in the backyard of male consciousness, the thought is dormant that in shorts he will look like a boy in short pants, that is, not manly. And no arguments about the soldiers of the Second World War, about the great athletes and pictures like this one will convince you to the end:

To this were added modern stereotypes about glamorous boys with dubious orientation in short shorts, and with them about hipsters, whom everyone hates so fiercely.

But the shorts are not at all as insidious as they seem. If you follow simple rules, they will not only not damage your masculinity, but will also strengthen it, add charm and style to your image.

Never wear shorts when planning work contacts

You can afford to appear in front of colleagues / clients in shorts if you are a very big boss and your authority is unshakable. Or if the event is so informal that it implies this form of clothing (for example, Ulcamp, which we wrote about recently). Well, or if "in our office everything is possible and everyone walks as they want, even in swimming trunks." In all other cases, it is better to refrain from shorts at work. Somewhere in overseas countries, in Bermuda, for example, shorts are freely worn anywhere and treat them neutrally, but in our reality everything is somewhat different.

Never wear shorts with socks

Formally, this is not prohibited by anyone and is not written in any law. But it is so. Shoes can be very different: sandals, moccasins, shoes or topsiders. But no socks. As a last resort, you can use short socks or underfoot socks that are not visible in the shoes. Recently, however, there has been a fashionable tendency to deliberately break this rule. However, violators do not just put on any kind of socks and any kind of shorts for them. They carefully select every smallest detail, they ate a dog in the fashion world. If you are not a hipster, not a dude and your style-skill is not pumped up to level 80 - just don't do it. Just don't wear shorts with socks and that's it. Exception: running shoes + short white athletic socks (small stripe on the ankle visible) + sporty style. Compare these photos and feel the difference:

Correct length

The classic length of the shorts is just above the knee. Not lower and not higher. The knee should be slightly covered, not completely. "Fashionable" shorts come in a variety of lengths and shapes, and then the choice is yours. If you have not worn shorts before, take a closer look at the models of simple classic cut. And even if your figure is perfect and your legs are exceptionally slim, you should not buy shorts that are too short. Unless, of course, your style implies things like this:

Well, everything that is significantly below the knee is no longer shorts, but breeches or cropped trousers.

Consider the features of your figure

The shorts visually increase the volume of the upper part of your legs. Especially wide, loose fit shorts. If you have thin calves, if your legs are plump on top - be very careful with the choice. In this case, it is better to buy classic, straight shorts in a calm color without a pattern: for example, khaki, beige, olive. In general, it is better not to experiment with color once again if you are not sure of your sense of style, even if the seller assures you that this color is in fashion now.

What to wear with shorts

The most popular and neutral options are: shirts, polos, light knitwear and T-shirts. A shirt (of course, without a tie) is preferable with a short sleeve or rolled up to the elbow. A more stylish and risky option is shorts with a jacket or blazer.

Finally, don't forget about accessories: a watch, a stylish phone case, a fashionable gadget, a good men's bag. All this will help you to feel comfortable and presentable in shorts.
