In the center of the plot is a silent hero named Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle). He gets out of jail a few days ahead of schedule because his wife Laura (Emily Browning) and best friend are dying in a car accident. On the way home, Shadow meets the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), who hires the hero as a guard.

It turns out that Wednesday wants to unite the old gods - mythical creatures who came to America with immigrants from different countries. They are going to regain their former greatness and fight the new gods - the patrons of media and technology - under the leadership of Mr. World (Crispin Glover).

In the finale of the first season, the confrontation had already become open, and Shadow learned that Mr. Wednesday is actually God One. But then the plot of the series began to deviate further and further from the original. A significant part of the action is devoted to the development of the relationship between the resurrected Laura and the leprechaun Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber).

There are major twists and turns in the season 2 finale. Sweeney dies, and Mr. World and his assistants, using their influence on the media, accuse Shadow and Mr. Wednesday of a variety of violent crimes. After that, the main character leaves with new documents.

According to the official synopsis, as well as the original book, in the third season, the Shadow will hide in the small town of Lakeside (or Lakeside). People will start to disappear there, and the hero will be arrested again.

In the book, Mr. Wednesday was shot by a sniper during these events. This prompted the old gods to clash with opponents. Later, Mr. Nancy and Chernobog will free Shadow from prison. Then the hero will descend into the realm of the dead and find out that everything was planned in advance by Mr. Wednesday. And Mr. World is actually his assistant Loki. With a high degree of probability, the plot of the series will go the other way. In particular, in the original, Laura and Sweeney were episodic characters, and in the film adaptation, a significant part of the second season is devoted to them, and their storyline may end in a completely different way. And judging by the unhurried development of the action in the series, only the Lakeside part will get out of the original in the third season.
