There is not too much information yet, but it is already possible to make the first assumptions about the plot.
The third season of one of the main hits of the HBO channel has ended. Even though Westworld's ratings have fallen ‘Westworld’ Season 3 Finale Down 18% From Last Season year after year, it is still watched by a huge number of viewers. Therefore, the series is expected to receive a continuation.
When will Westworld season 4 come out?
Westworld has been extended even before the third season finale. However, this does not mean an early start of work. Previous seasons came out every two years. Therefore, the continuation should be expected no earlier than 2022.
It is also unknown how the coronavirus pandemic will affect the timing. It won't stop the writers from working on the plot. But how long the quarantine will last and whether the filming will be suspended later, no one can predict.
What did the first seasons of Westworld talk about?
What was shown in the 1st season
Initially, the action of "Westworld" took place in the amusement park of the same name, where wealthy guests can embark on all sorts of adventures together with androids indistinguishable from humans. In addition, visitors often went to the park to fulfill their hidden and most violent fantasies. Robots, on the other hand, live in an endless cycle of the same events, considering themselves human.
One of the creators of the park, Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), added "dreams" to the machine program to make robots even more like humans. This led to frequent crashes: androids began to dream, consisting of scraps of past cycles. Delos' board of directors removes Ford from management and sends Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) to oversee the park.
In parallel, the story was told of William (Jimmy Simpson), who fell in love with the android Dolores Abernati (Evan Rachel Wood) and then became disillusioned with life. Over time, he turned into the Man in Black (Ed Harris), obsessed with finding some center of the labyrinth. In fact, this is the key to awakening Dolores's consciousness.
Android Maeve (Thandie Newton) realized the unreality of the park and increased her characteristics by being able to control other cars. After that, she decided to find her daughter, whom she saw in her dreams.
In the finale of the first season, Dolores regained consciousness and, right during the presentation, killed Ford, starting a rebellion in the park.
What was shown in the 2nd season
The second season focuses on how Dolores gathers an army of machines to fight people.
Meanwhile, Ford's assistant Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) - also an android - is trying to remember the events that led to the death of many cars. Maeve almost ran away from the park, but decided to stay. Together with her companions, she entered the Shogun World, based on Japanese history.
In the final, she managed to send some of the androids to a certain "Hill". This is the ideal world of machines, where they can exist without a body shell. Dolores, on the other hand, managed to escape from the park into the real world, taking with her five "pearls" - modules that contain the consciousness of androids.
In addition, it was revealed that the amusement park was created to collect information about its visitors and control them in everyday life.
What was shown in the 3rd season
The sequel is radically different from what was originally shown in the series. The action develops linearly and outside the walls of amusement parks. The viewer is introduced to the world of the future, in many ways reminiscent of the films of the cyberpunk genre.
Former soldier, and now a mercenary Caleb (Aaron Paul), who by order intimidates or kills people, meets the escaped Dolores. She plans to take over the management of the parks. For this, the heroine uses an android in the guise of Charlotte. But it turns out that the company is being bought by Angerran Serac (Vincent Cassel). He promises to return his daughter Maeve, and she decides to help destroy Dolores.
As it turns out, people in the real world have long been living like cars in parks: all their data is loaded into the Rehoboam computer, which calculates the future. He chooses the best options for the development of mankind. And everyone who does not fit into these schemes is killed or immersed in suspended animation.
Dolores decides to free people from such slavery. And it is Caleb who must lead the revolution. Serac tries to stop Dolores and use her to infiltrate the Upland. But in fact, only Bernard has the key.
Moreover, it turns out that the "pearls" that Dolores took out of the park were not other robots, but her own copies. But Charlotte eventually gains her own consciousness, becoming attached to the family of her prototype. She becomes disillusioned with Dolores' actions and decides to go her own way.
What will happen in the 4th season of "Westworld"
In the third season finale, Dolores somehow managed to defeat Rehoboam and force it to self-destruct. At the same time, mass protests of people begin on the streets: they learned that their entire career, family relationships and even death were calculated long ago by a computer. Probably, in the future, Caleb will really lead the revolution. Maeve will become his main companion.
Dolores seems to have finally died. Series creator Jonathan Nolan confirmed in an interview that this character is dead. But he did not rule out the possibility of her return in a different form. Perhaps it will turn into a new version of Rehoboam.
At the end of the third season, Bernard plunged into the Upland and seems to have spent a lot of time there: he woke up covered in dust. If the fourth season also develops linearly, then the audience will see a significant leap in time. Probably will show the consequences of mass uprisings.
The post-credits scene is also important: in it, William arrives at Delos and discovers that Charlotte is creating an entire army of androids. After that, he is killed by his own copy. Perhaps in the new season, under the leadership of Charlotte, cars will begin to replace people in key positions. A full-fledged war may even begin between humanity and robots.
However, so far all these are just assumptions. In the same interview, the authors emphasize that they don't even have specific plans for the new season yet. Therefore, one can only guess about the possible development of the plot.
