Certain substances and foods, when combined with alcohol, can lead to serious health problems and even death.
1. Medicines
Research shows that alcohol can be dangerous to use with any drug because it alters the effect. However, in some cases, the adverse effect can be predicted.
Antibacterial drugs
The ban on mixing alcohol with antibiotics has long become an axiom that does not seem to require proof. This rule applies to all substances that are used to combat microorganisms and parasites found in various tissues and internal organs of a person. These include antibiotics, sulfonamides, nitrofuran derivatives, metronidazole, anti-tuberculosis drugs.
Drinking alcohol while taking these drugs weakens or neutralizes the effect of the drugs. Alcohol in combination with certain substances can have more unpleasant consequences.
Nitrofurans and metronidazole
The enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase is responsible for the processing of alcohol in the body. Preparations of the nitrofuran group (furazolidone, nitrofurantoin, furadonin, furacilin, furagin, nifuroxazide) and metronidazole block its production, acetaldehyde accumulates in the body - a product of intermediate oxidation. This leads to the disulfiram-ethanol reaction, which manifests itself as a severe hangover.
Cephalosporins
Antibiotics of the cephalosporin group (cefazolin, cephalexin, ceftolosan) inhibit the oxidation of alcohol, prolong the state of intoxication and the toxic effects of alcohol.
Anti-tuberculosis drugs
With repeated use of alcohol, the detrimental effect of drugs on the liver increases.
Analgesics
Taking aspirin, amidopyrine, analgin, butadione and other drugs of this group with alcohol can lead to drug intolerance. The combination of alcohol with paracetamol and similar antipyretics causes severe liver damage.
Means for the cardiovascular system
The combined use of nitroglycerin, validol, sustak, erinit, nitrosorbide, verapamil and alcohol leads to a sharp drop in blood pressure, combined with dizziness and nausea.
As for drugs against hypertension, in the first hours alcohol stimulates their action due to the ability to dilate blood vessels. However, then stimulation of the nervous system with ethanol will lead to the fact that the blood pressure rises even higher.
Sedative and hypnotic
Alcohol enhances the effect of drugs, as both alcohol and drugs inhibit the central nervous system. This can lead to damage to the respiratory center in the brain and cessation of breathing, cardiac arrest and death.
Insulin
Alcohol lowers blood glucose, which can lead to a hypoglycemic attack and coma while taking insulin, which has the same effect. At the same time, studies show that people with diabetes who are undernourished are mostly at risk.
Anticoagulants
Alcohol in combination with substances that prevent blood clotting - dicoumarin, phenylin and even banal aspirin - can lead to extensive bleeding and hemorrhages in internal organs, which can result in death.
2. Energy
Caffeine and other tonic substances have a stimulating effect on the nervous system, while alcohol has a depressing effect. Taken together, this mixture masks the real degree of intoxication, so a person drinks more alcohol than he can afford, which increases the burden on the liver and other organs.
Among the side effects of a cocktail of alcohol and energy are increased blood pressure, spasms of the cerebral vessels, convulsions, stroke and heart attack.
3. Marinades
Pickled cucumbers and tomatoes are not as good an alcoholic snack as it is commonly believed. Vinegar slows down the breakdown of alcohol in the body, which increases the toxic effects of ethanol on the liver and kidneys. The dehydration resulting from the delayed processing of alcoholic beverages inflicts an additional blow on these organs.
4. Desserts and sweets
This item includes not only cakes, pastries, sweets, but also fruits and berries with a high content of simple sugars.
Alcohol has practically zero nutritional value and high energy, so the body breaks it down immediately. Sugars compete with alcohol in the line for processing, so the breakdown of alcohol slows down, and the time of its toxic effects on the body increases. This can lead to poisoning.
Do not forget that alcohol is dangerous not only in special combinations, but also in and of itself. According to the World Health Organization, alcohol is responsible for 5.9% of deaths in the world and 5.1% of diseases and injuries. Therefore, drinking alcoholic beverages should be prudent even in relatively safe combinations.
