Scientists have found that sleeping at cool temperatures has a positive effect on the body and improves metabolism.
There are two types of fat in the body: white and brown. White is the calorie store. And brown provides heat generation. Brown adipose tissue is developed in newborns. It helps them keep warm, but as we age, we lose most of these tissues.
Unlike white fat, which stores a calorie store, brown fat helps burn calories.
Researchers at the US National Institutes of Health have found that you can increase your brown fat levels by sleeping in a cool room.
Scientists conducted such an experiment: five healthy participants slept in a temperature-controlled environment for four months. The number of calories they consumed was also taken into account. During the first month, a neutral temperature of 24 ° C was maintained during sleep. The following month, it was lowered to 19 ° C, then raised again to neutral. And in the last month, the temperature was raised to 27 ° C.
It turned out that the cool temperature significantly affects the body. After just a month of sleeping in a cool room, the participants' stores of brown fat almost doubled. This in turn improved their insulin sensitivity. This characteristic shows how well the body absorbs glucose. With decreased insulin sensitivity, the risk of developing diabetes increases.
Also in this month, participants burned more calories throughout the day. But as soon as they began to sleep again at an elevated temperature, all the changes came to naught. The content of brown adipose tissue returned to the same level as before the experiment.
This is great news. After all, it turns out that in order to restart your metabolism, you just need to sleep in a cool room.
