Use a thick mixture of water and salt to get rid of stuck-on food pieces. Wipe the surface with this "scrub" using a sponge or paper towel. Remove any remaining salt.
Dry the dishes thoroughly. You can dry it on the stove with a low power of the burner, or simply wipe it dry with a towel. This will protect the cast iron from rusting.
Using a paper towel, apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the inside of the crockery. Spread over the entire area and remove excess. This will create a protective, non-stick layer. Place the dishes in a dry place until next use.
