What is risk? On the one hand, this is an opportunity to draw out a lucky ticket, and on the other, it is a danger of failing. So is it worth the risk? In this article, we give five reasons why you should go all-in at least occasionally.
Risk is one of those things that are difficult to measure. Think for yourself, what does the expression "go all-in" really mean?
I did not fully understand the meaning of this expression until I began to increasingly find myself in situations where I was given a unique opportunity to take risks. These situations had nothing to do with jumping off a high cliff or investing all the savings in a new business.
It was more like a choice of whether to stick to a tried and true route that will keep you out of the way if you fail, or go your own way and do what is arguably effective and exciting.
Things like wearing neutral clothing, using standard company marketing materials, or being out of position when negotiating with superiors are considered safe.
But if I dilute my wardrobe with flashy clothes, develop my own presentation, promote my ideas, it will already mean that I have taken risks and may fail.
I love the sense of risk, so I chose the latter, and my choice paid off. It made me visible to colleagues, bosses, and clients. They began to perceive me as a confident, intelligent and promising person with whom they can do business. My success curve went up.
Since then, I've come to see that risk, besides the danger of failure, has many other benefits that open the door to great results.
1. Risk makes you more visible
Many people take the easiest route possible. This is due to the fact that most of them do not believe in themselves and their capabilities. And risk is always a challenge to yourself and a feeling of discomfort.
Taking risks is not a common behavior in society. When you take risks, you are taking actions that are beyond the ordinary. Thus, you draw attention to yourself.
And when you get noticed, you are more likely to get promotions, clients, or great deals.
2. Risk Leads to Change
Many people complain that they are bored with the lifestyle they lead. They are bored with their life, work, environment and much more. And the question is how to change everything?
There is only one way to break out of the usual circle of events - to start doing what you have not done before. This is not as simple advice as it might seem.
Doing something different is always uncomfortable. Moreover, you never know for sure if you will succeed, and this uncertainty is accompanied by a feeling of fear.
But the truth is, taking risks, wasting time and not achieving tangible results is the only way to make a difference. Therefore, it is worth your effort. Even if your plan turns out to be ineffective, believe me, it will give you much more rewarding experience than many years of measured and calm life.
3. Risk makes you feel alive
There is a certain sense of satisfaction that you are doing everything right, but that feeling can never be compared to the thrill you get when you take a risk. Only this feeling is already worth the risk. In truth, I have noticed that I am becoming more and more addicted to this feeling.
4. Risk sets high standards
Risk paves the way for big wins. As soon as you feel their taste, new standards immediately begin to form in your head. You no longer feel the satisfaction of achieving past results. From now on, you need more. And it pushes you forward. This creates a new comfort zone, where risk becomes commonplace, and the level of the norm rises sharply. And then new victories follow, new results, a new level of norm, and everything repeats itself.
5. Taking risks will show what you are capable of
Since risk is often an expression of your own ideas, attitudes and preferences, it can tell you a lot about yourself. After all, the more new you try, the more new abilities you discover in yourself, the better you get to know yourself and your capabilities. And the more successful you are in these new areas for yourself, the more confident you become.
The moral is that we do not know about our true abilities until we have the courage to take a chance. We define the boundaries of what is permissible for ourselves. And it is in your power to expand them.
Is there a downside to all this? There is. You can risk and fail. Nobody is immune from this. And it's up to you to decide whether to continue to be content with little or try to take risks in pursuit of happiness …
